New details in Jovan Belcher death reported by KC Star

KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Star released new details today in the murder-suicide case involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher and his live-in girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins.

According to the Star's interview with Police Sgt. Richard Sharp, the Chiefs were aware of the couple's problems and had been providing counseling to Belcher, 25, and Perkins, 22.

Additional sources indicated Belcher and Perkins had been arguing over the relationship and financial issues throughout the months prior.

Belcher fatally shot Perkins Saturday at the couple's home before fleeing to Arrowhead Stadium. He interacted with several members of the Chiefs' staff before shooting himself in the head.

Chiefs Head Coach Romeo Crennel attempted to dissuade Belcher, telling the Star, "I was trying to get him to understand that life is not over. He still has a chance and let’s get this worked out."

Kansas City police assume Belcher killed himself because he was distraught over killing Perkins.

"He cared about her,” Sharp told the Star. “I don’t think he could live with himself.”
