127 Seniors game day planned

The 127 Seniors met on a beautiful day for the usual game of bingo, coffee, sweets and conversation. Arlene Simmons called the numbers, and Buckeye Home Health furnished the gifts. Fred Zoeller, president, opened the meeting, and Brenda Williams gave the prayer, followed by Frank Knapp leading the pledge to the flag.

Jan Neitzke gave the treasurer's report for January, followed by the trips list. The final payment for the Savannah trip is due March 2. Money for the Murfreesboro/Bell Buckle trip is due in May. The bus for that trip will be leaving the senior center at 7 a.m. that morning and returning around 6 p.m. that evening. The date is June 12, and the cost is $50, which includes lunch.

The three-day trip to Helen, GA, will be July 10-12. More details to follow, but this trip will include a stop at Warm Springs, GA, and Callaway Gardens. The trip for August will be to the Country Music Hall of Fame and the trip for September will be to Falcon Rest Dinner Theater. October will be the trip to the Grand Canyon. The November trip will be to the Grand Ole Opry, and a trip in December will be to Pigeon Forge for a Christmas show.

Nancy Fincher gave the sunshine report and asked everyone to keep the following in their prayers: Doris Fraser, Dorothy Conklin, Pat Mount, T.C. Lewis and Mario Gambaccini.

Fred reminded everyone about the Feb. 24 election for a new board member. Also, game day will be Feb. 28. Keep buying Kroger coupons, bring in items for the 127 sale and enjoy free bluegrass music every Thursday evening at the center.

Bob Jones provided gospel music. After the table blessing, Jan. Neitzke and her kitchen helpers served cubed steak along with sides brought in by members.

Volunteers add so much richness and needed support to the educational program of the students of the Pleasant Hill Elementary School. The fourth-grade teachers organized and carried out this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Tea honoring the 61 volunteers that have helped at the school. The school year’s theme was “Planting the Seeds of Knowledge” so the volunteers were given certificates, seeds and flower pots with the inscription, “Planting the Seeds of Kindness.”

  • Fair Park.jpg You’re never too old to learn computers at Fair Park

Everyone is working to keep up with today’s fast pace technology. But it can all be very confusing to a lot of older adults, who sometimes feel left out. Sitting in front of the computer, they just don’t know where or how to start. They just need someone to explain it, show them and get them started on the basics.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Reader inquires about Eastern tent caterpillars

In April, Donna from the Crossville area emailed to ask about Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). She wrote:  "We seem to have an overabundance (and early appearance) of tent caterpillars. Most are too high in trees to reach. Any ideas on how to get a better handle on them? Are they precursors to a moth or butterfly?"

  • Around the Town: The best of times, the worst of times

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” I think that old saying would aptly describe most people’s high school experience. It certainly would for me. Analyzing my four years of high school from several decades out, I am concluding that probably 98 percent of mine was very good. The other two percent not so much.
