Cumberland County has produced many shining stars

CROSSVILLE — I do my most serious thinking in the early morning. So, it was during one of my early morning ponderings that it occurred to me: Cumberland County has a lot of people who have made their mark on television and/or film or who have catapulted to fame by way of the pageant stage.

There is Bob Gunton who has numerous film credits to his name; Ashley Guthrie who appeared in the film Simpatico; Mandy Barnett, who has garnered lots of fame via her vocals; Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain; Lisa Tollett Milligan, Miss Tennessee, NFL cheerleader; Stormi Henley, Miss Teen Tennessee/Teen USA; Kelly Deadmon, who has appeared in numerous commercials, "Law and Order" and various other television broadcasts; and Julie Emery, who has an ever growing list of credits to her name. And these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I am sure you may know of others.

Periodically, I try to do an update on who is doing what. This time, I contacted Julie Emery, a Cumberland County High School graduate with family still here in Crossville to find out what latest projects she has in the works and here is what she had to say:

“I was on an episode of 'Royal Pains' over the summer. They are going to re-air it soon. I just completed shooting on two movies. One is untitled but is being produced by the the Farrelly Brothers with Live Schreiber and Naomi Watts. A small movie, called The A Plate features Sam McMurry and Priscilla Barnes playing my parents. I am also getting ready to shoot a recurring role on a new USA pilot called 'A Legal Mind' in a couple of weeks. It is a really, fun project and hasn’t been picked up yet.”

The actress also tells me that she and her husband are co-producing a series on the web titled “Then We Got Help.” This series is something she says she is really proud of. “I created it, wrote it and directed, my husband and I produced it. We have a cast full of Broadway veterans and film/TV actors I have worked with. They are amazing. And my mom (Janice Fields) flies up every shoot day and does craft services and catering for us. This means," Emery laughs, "she cooks all day and the cast is in love with her!”

Emery says they are just launched a Kick Starter campaign to raise money for season two. Kick Starter is a group funding website for small artistic projects like Emery’s. People may give as little as one dollar or as much as they want to projects they want to help get off the ground. “The incentive program," Emery says, "starts as low as $5. You can find the link on the Facebook fan page for 'Then We Got Help.'”

If you are feeling like running in a competition, then you may want to register for the Rotary Club’s 5K race and one-mile run/walk this Saturday, Oct. 16. The race will begin at 8 a.m. at the corner of 4th and Main. Awards will be given to the top three overall male/female finishers, as well as the top three male/female finishers in age divisions by five-year increments. Special recognition will be given for all one-mile walk/run participants, as well as team and school group recognition.

If you want more information, check out www.crossvillerotary.org or contact Dr. Jonathan Robertson at 456-8880 or Marlo Wright at mwright@agent.shelterinsurance.com.

All of the proceeds will benefit local service projects of the Crossville Noon Rotary Club including scholarships, Christmas blue jean and food box projects, third-grade dictionary and fourth-grade character projects.

Volunteers add so much richness and needed support to the educational program of the students of the Pleasant Hill Elementary School. The fourth-grade teachers organized and carried out this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Tea honoring the 61 volunteers that have helped at the school. The school year’s theme was “Planting the Seeds of Knowledge” so the volunteers were given certificates, seeds and flower pots with the inscription, “Planting the Seeds of Kindness.”

  • Fair Park.jpg You’re never too old to learn computers at Fair Park

Everyone is working to keep up with today’s fast pace technology. But it can all be very confusing to a lot of older adults, who sometimes feel left out. Sitting in front of the computer, they just don’t know where or how to start. They just need someone to explain it, show them and get them started on the basics.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Reader inquires about Eastern tent caterpillars

In April, Donna from the Crossville area emailed to ask about Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). She wrote:  "We seem to have an overabundance (and early appearance) of tent caterpillars. Most are too high in trees to reach. Any ideas on how to get a better handle on them? Are they precursors to a moth or butterfly?"

  • Around the Town: The best of times, the worst of times

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” I think that old saying would aptly describe most people’s high school experience. It certainly would for me. Analyzing my four years of high school from several decades out, I am concluding that probably 98 percent of mine was very good. The other two percent not so much.
