Terry Henderson to visit Fair Park

Terry Henderson grew up in Lima Ohio singing with his 11 siblings on the front porch at family gatherings. He was most influenced by two uncles, one a jazz pianist and the other a jazz saxophonist. So music runs deep is in his blood.

Before retiring from Honda he would sing at the dealerships. He also had the opportunity to sing with the famous Patti Labelle.

Since retiring to Crossville in 2008, Henderson has been busy performing. He has been in numerous productions with Dennis Donald, like Malt Shop Memories, Return of the Rat Pack, Voices of Vegas and Simms Jazz Shows with many other appearances and benefits. He currently hosts karaoke contests every weekend at the Roadhouse.

Henderson will be the special guest entertainer for Black History month at Fair Park. He will be there at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning, and all seniors are welcome to come and enjoy the smooth vocals and captivating charm that has garnered Henderson so many fans in the area.

You can learn ballroom dancing with European championship instructor George Salvalore and his dancing partners, Frances Cunningham Brooks and Carlene Hesters. Class is every Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. You will love it.

Looking for something to do on Saturday night? Everyone is welcomed to head to the center for dancing with the Special Delivery Band starting at 7 p.m.

Bilbrey Funeral Home sponsors the art classes at the center. David McMurtrie, a live model for the study of portraits, conducts the art class on Tuesday at 1 p.m. It is free as well as origami classes held Mondays at 2 p.m with Patricia Westerfield.

Coming up in March, there will be pottery classes with Patrick Green in the craft barn and basic computer classes with James Dunlap. You can always find something to do at the senior center, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is across from the Cumberland County Fairgrounds, 1433 Livingston Rd. in Crossville. You can also visit the center’s website at http://www.fairparkseniorcenter.org to keep up-to-date on the latest programs and activities that are being offered, as well as on-line versions of the center’s monthly newsletter, “Newsline.” For more information, call 484-7416.

Volunteers add so much richness and needed support to the educational program of the students of the Pleasant Hill Elementary School. The fourth-grade teachers organized and carried out this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Tea honoring the 61 volunteers that have helped at the school. The school year’s theme was “Planting the Seeds of Knowledge” so the volunteers were given certificates, seeds and flower pots with the inscription, “Planting the Seeds of Kindness.”

  • Fair Park.jpg You’re never too old to learn computers at Fair Park

Everyone is working to keep up with today’s fast pace technology. But it can all be very confusing to a lot of older adults, who sometimes feel left out. Sitting in front of the computer, they just don’t know where or how to start. They just need someone to explain it, show them and get them started on the basics.

  • PLATEAU GARDENING: Reader inquires about Eastern tent caterpillars

In April, Donna from the Crossville area emailed to ask about Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). She wrote:  "We seem to have an overabundance (and early appearance) of tent caterpillars. Most are too high in trees to reach. Any ideas on how to get a better handle on them? Are they precursors to a moth or butterfly?"

  • Around the Town: The best of times, the worst of times

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” I think that old saying would aptly describe most people’s high school experience. It certainly would for me. Analyzing my four years of high school from several decades out, I am concluding that probably 98 percent of mine was very good. The other two percent not so much.
