CROSSVILLE —
Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity honored Terry Jarvis as January 2012 Volunteer of the Month. Jarvis has volunteered in the Habitat Restore for about two months, donating his time to building materials three days a week.
“I enjoy the opportunity to donate my time to a great organization and plan to continue to do so,” said Jarvis about volunteering.
Jarvis and his wife, Helen, who also volunteers her time at Habitat, moved to Crossville 1 1/2 years ago from a remote farm in Central West Virginia where they lived for 15 years.
“I enjoyed being close to nature with plenty of opportunities for fishing, hunting, four-wheeling and enjoying the great outdoors to the fullest,” he said.
He retired with nearly 34 years service from Babcock and Wilcox Company in Ohio, where his latest occupation was an analyst in the information systems department. His community service does not stop with Habitat. He has spent a lot of his time in service to help others through his church, Pinegrove Church of God, and the Crossville Lions Club, along with other community activities.
“Terry is such a blessing to Habitat,” said Barb Dahar, chair of the Restore committee. “He has no limitations in what he will do for others.”
When asked about receiving the award, Jarvis said, “I thank all those people who nominated me for this award. I plan to continue to volunteer with a great group of people. I enjoy and am blessed whenever I am able to help or can contribute to meeting the needs of others.”
For information about volunteering, donating or applying for a home, call 484-4565 or stop by at 329 McLarty Lane in Crossville. They are now accepting applications for the 2012 building season. You can also visit Habitat’s Facebook page or their website at www.cumberlandhabitat.com.

PLEASANT HILL RAMBLINGS: Volunteers add richness to Pleasant Hill Elementary
Volunteers add so much richness and needed support to the educational program of the students of the Pleasant Hill Elementary School. The fourth-grade teachers organized and carried out this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Tea honoring the 61 volunteers that have helped at the school. The school year’s theme was “Planting the Seeds of Knowledge” so the volunteers were given certificates, seeds and flower pots with the inscription, “Planting the Seeds of Kindness.”

You’re never too old to learn computers at Fair Park
Everyone is working to keep up with today’s fast pace technology. But it can all be very confusing to a lot of older adults, who sometimes feel left out. Sitting in front of the computer, they just don’t know where or how to start. They just need someone to explain it, show them and get them started on the basics.

PLATEAU GARDENING: Reader inquires about Eastern tent caterpillars
In April, Donna from the Crossville area emailed to ask about Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). She wrote: "We seem to have an overabundance (and early appearance) of tent caterpillars. Most are too high in trees to reach. Any ideas on how to get a better handle on them? Are they precursors to a moth or butterfly?"

Around the Town: The best of times, the worst of times
“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” I think that old saying would aptly describe most people’s high school experience. It certainly would for me. Analyzing my four years of high school from several decades out, I am concluding that probably 98 percent of mine was very good. The other two percent not so much.
