Pleasant Hill Ramblings: Pack 170 completes year

CROSSVILLE — Finishing off the 2012 calendar year, Cub Scout Pack 170 held its last pack meeting of the year Tuesday, Nov. 20, at which time advancements were awarded and plans were made for fund-raising activities on Black Friday. Members of Boy Scout Troop 170 joined with the Cubs in the Black Friday activities, which involved offering coffee, cocoa and donuts for contributions at Kmart and Dunham’s Sports in the early morning hours of the Friday after Thanksgiving. A full calendar of events is planned for the rest of the school year.

Troop 170 held its final 2012 Court of Honor Monday, Nov. 26 in the Pleasant Hill Community House, at which time a number of advancements were recognized:

Jake Campbell — rank: 1st Class; merit badges: Crime Prevention, Electronics, Fingerprinting and Radio.

Kendall Cooper — rank: 1st Class; merit badges: Fishing, Shotgun Shooting and Wilderness Survival.

Ethan Cunningham — rank: Star; merit badges: Camping and Environmental Science.

Shawn Grove — rank: Tenderfoot.

John Miller — merit badges: Photography, Rifle Shooting, Space Exploration.

Ronnie Miller — rank: 1st Class; merit badges, Canoeing, Shotgun Shooting and Weather.

Josh Northern, Dalton Smith, Tyler Stone and Joe Tecco — rank: Boy Scout.

Jody Marshall, Ezekiel Willier and Isaac Willier — rank: 2nd Class.

Norman Cunningham, representing the Pleasant Hill Area Citizens Scouting Group, praised the parents for their active participation and support for scouting. It was heartwarming to see each scout pin a medal on his mom and give her a hug.

The troop received an Honor Troop Award from Camp Buck Toms in July 2012. They have participated in a full slate of activities this fall led by Scoutmaster Mike Cooper and Assistant Scoutmaster Andria Cunningham. Besides hiking, swimming, fishing, community service, food drives and fundraising, Troop 170 Scouts helped with the Pleasant Hill Town Festival and the Alternative Christmas Fair. Among their community service activities were food distribution and cutting wood for the elderly. They shared inter-troop, district and council activities with many other Scouts.

Plans are under way for several Scouts to attend the coming national jamboree, and that, in addition to summer camp, will be the focus of future fund-raising activities. Their leaders have developed a troop web page — http://phtroop170.weebly.com/ — for Scouts, parents and interested persons to keep abreast of their activities.

My landscape is perennial–based. There are vines, trees, shrubs as well as herbaceous (soft-stemmed) vegetation in assorted categories-ornamentals, herbs and food crops like rhubarb. Annuals in containers are used to add splashes of color. At this time of year, I usually have a few recently purchased plants waiting to be transplanted (see the accompanying photo).

A dog is a senior's best friend. Family and friends are not around much, and everyone is so busy. After retirement the free time seems to be longer. Many seniors would be very lonely if it was not for their four-legged friends. Dogs are a big part of the family, so they need to learn to be obedient to make it easier on the relationship.

  • Around the Town: Attendance is the Key to success in Cumberland County!

High school attendance is up and 10 cars have been given away. This is all thanks to some forward thinking educators along with Dave and Connie Kirk and the staff at Dave Kirk Automotive. Or, in layman's terms, some junior or senior from Cumberland County High School, Stone Memorial High School or Phoenix School wins a brand spanking new vehicle.
