Entertaining, upbeat, nostalgic, patriotic, and sometimes hilarious describe the new 2009 USO Show scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown Crossville.

Fast becoming a community-wide patriotic tradition, the USO Show this year will not only transport the audience back to the 1940s’ World War II years, but will feature entertainers and events from the 1950s’ Korean War and 1960s’ Vietnam War eras.

Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Perry Como, Bette Midler, Tony Bennett, and Marty Robbins are just a few of the stars added to this year’s performances. Returning are some of the “old” favorites—Frank Sinatra, “Lucy,” Dean Martin, and Doris Day.

A few of the performers include several popular personalities in Crossville and the surrounding area: Pattie Payne, Jack Irvin, Rusty McClanahan, Carlena Hester, Rob Baker, Karen Vaden, and Teresa Wilson. Others might be your talented neighbors and friends.

Presented by The Crab-Orchard Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Uncle Sam’s Original Show is designed to honor and pay tribute to all our veterans who served our country so loyally during war and peacetime.

Proceeds from the show support the chapter’s historic preservation, education, and patriotic activities in the community, including the Cumberland County Veterans’ Emergency Fund, established two years ago by the DAR Chapter and administered by the Cumberland County Veterans Service Office. The DAR Chapter’s Service for Veterans Committee was also instrumental in documenting the original need for a county-funded Veterans Service Office in Cumberland County.

This year’s show will include two performances on Saturday, Nov. 21, a 2 p.m. matinee and a 6 p.m. evening performance. Reserved-seat tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Palace Theatre, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Last year’s performances were both sold out, so show your patriotic spirit and get ready for a fun and exciting USO Show by purchasing your tickets early. Tickets are available now at the Palace Theatre.

The River WILD!
The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River winds its way through the 125,000 acres of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area before flowing into the Cumberland River and Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. It’s a free-flowing river, with no dams to control release of the water, but the scenery and the magnificent rock formations make it a favorite of paddling enthusiasts who watch the weather to see if they can get out and explore areas that are hard to reach by foot.

Farmer's Market opens for business June 2
The Cumberland County Farmer’s Market will officially open the growing season as it has every year since 1978. This year’s “opening” will be Saturday, June 2, at the traditional location on Livingston Rd., next to the fairgrounds. Selling will begin early (6:30 a.m. or so), although some vendors may set up a few hours later in order to provide the freshest vegetables picked just that morning. There is usually a good selection until well after noon.

Joe White, Cumberland County Korean War Veteran, was honored as the recipient of the prestigious Community Service Award by The Crab-Orchard Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution at its annual Awards Dinner on Thursday evening, April 20, at the Art Circle Public Library community room.

Memorial Day ceremony set
The Cumberland County Veterans Council will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony May 28 at the Cumberland County Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. with the Cumberland County Band performing, flag/colors presentation, an incredible singer, guest speakers and a special key-note speaker.

Pleasant Hill Ramblings: Spring Festival celebrates inaugural event
After six weeks of rainstorms missing the town, Saturday morning dawned with a drizzly rain, needed, but not that day. Always optimistic, the volunteers went to work setting up the festival, and by the 10 a.m. starting time, there was no more rain. The PH Ensemble, led by Bob Savage, began the day with a variety of melodies.
