127 Seniors declare Music of the Cumberlands show a great success

By Marlyn Warren / Chronicle contributor

Members and guests of the 127 South Senior Center group gathered again in the rain for coffee and banana nut and blueberry bread furnished by president Shirley Phillips along with lots of chatting. Bingo started at 10 a.m., with prizes provided by Dr. Galloway of the Cumberland Eye Center and Arlene Simmons calling the numbers.

President Phillips called the general meeting to order at 11 a.m. Larry Oslund led everyone in prayer, and Bob Kirkland led the pledge. She welcomed guests Don and Barb Davis and Johnnie Moore. By way of reminders, members continue to collect items for the 127 Yard Sale next year; bluegrass music is at 6 p.m. on Thursdays; and Woodmen of the World will have its big bingo annual game with lots of special prizes at the Community Complex at 10 a.m. on Nov. 17, and in the evening they will have their dinner and meeting at the senior center. Then don't forget the birthday tribute to Johnnie Moore at the Palace on Nov. 13.

The Music of the Cumberlands Show at the Playhouse last week was a great success. Rose Garchow coordinated all of the efforts that went into that production, and as a token of appreciation from the senior center, members presented Rose with a dozen beautiful red roses. Rose accepted graciously and thanked everyone who donated their time and talents.

Rose would like to specially thank the following entertainers for not only performing but doing it without compensation. They are the Dul-C-Mores, the Goldenairs, D.J Garrison, Fay Garrison, Dennis Donald, Patty Payne, Carol Marr, Luther Myers, Tommy Fencher and Jamie Harper. Again, thanks so much to each of them.

Jan gave her travel report. The Colorado trip remains sold out with a waiting list. If you want to get on the waiting list, please contact her at 788-3667. The next day-trip is to the Christmas Show at the Dixie Stampede on Dec. 12, at a cost of $60, which includes everything. There are seats available so again contact Jan at the above number.

She also mentioned the trip to hear Jeanne Robertson and Carl Hurley on Oct. 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Tivoli Theater. The cost, including dinner and the bus, is $55. Beyond these Jan is working on other travel for next year.

She concluded by reminding members that next Friday is the fifth Friday, and so they will be bringing sandwiches, salads and desserts only. Don't forget the Halloween party next Friday so bring your carved pumpkins, your pretty legs and best costumes for judging.

Carol Kirkland brought everyone current on the health issues of many of the members and old friends. Please do keep Bud Garchow, Dorothy Kearley, Daisy Thompson, Herb Hofmann, Peter Fournier, Pat Mount and Shirley Phillips in your thoughts and prayers.

The members were then introduced to Rusty and Linda McClanahan who shared many all-time favorite songs with us. Thanks so much to both of them.

After singing the table blessing, members and their guests enjoyed lunch of turkey and pasta and all the many casseroles, vegetables, salads and desserts along with coffee and iced tea. Virginia Herbert was in charge of the kitchen this week and she had lots of excellent help. See you all next week.
