PH students share recipes for Thanksgiving success

These turkey recipes are from Mrs. Debby Wilson’s first grade class at Pleasant Hill Elementary:

I will call Tristan’s daddy because he likes to hunt and will be a good day for him to shoot a turkey with his BB gun. I will go with him and Tristan. We will shoot a deer too. It’s heavy, but he can pick up anything. When we get home we will cut them up and when they get kind of little, we willput them in pans. We will put them on the stove to them for 5 hours. We will have corn, mashed potatoes and apple pie. The best thing I like about our house on Thanksgiving is to celebrate turkeys. I will call the visitor over before we play games.

Casey Clark

I will buy a big turkey at the store, probably Krogers. My mom will put stuffing in it and cook it in the oven at 15 degrees for about 12 hours. It’s really hot when it’s done. Mom makes cakes with us on Thanksgiving so we will have chocolate cake, muffins and cupcakes too. My whole family cleans the kitchen, then we’ll go to our room and play.

Brielle Sanders

I am going to the woods. I will catch a turkey by his feathers. Then I will kill him with a knife. I will carry him to the turck by his feathers. My mom will skin him and boil him in a pot. We will have ham, macaroni and cheese and ice cream and cake for dessert. We will go to a restaurant and eat too. Probably Ryan’s. Then we will go buy stuff at Wal-Mart.

William Kelley

I’m hunting a turkey in the woods, me and my daddy. I will wear cammo and hide beside a tree. I will be real quiet. I will see one and shoot it with my 410 shotgun. I will tie him up to the car and drag him home. Then, I will skin him and my pa or my dad will bake him for 10 minutes. He looks like a large, fat chicken when he’s done. We will have chicken and hamburger helper, too. Honey for dessert. I love honey! We will be going to granny’s house to eat. Thanksgiving is fun and we give out presents.

Dillon Sherrill

Me and my mom and dad and sisters will go looking for a turkey. We will get a tree seat and sit on it. Then we will get a BB gun to shoot it because we can’t eat a live turkey. When we get one we will take it home and my mom and grandparents will put stuffing in it. Then they will roast it for two hours. My mom will put this food temperature thing in it to see if it’s done. She will put vegetables on lettuce all around it. We will have juice and root beer.

Thanksgiving is almost like Christmas because we can have family night and play games.

James Williams

I am going hunting in the woods with my dad to get a turkey. I will call a turkey with my turkey horn. I will get ready and shoot one with my bow and arrow. My mom will take a knife and cut off his feathers and bake it in the oven for one minute at ten degrees. Maybe it will look like a ham when it’s done. We will have some chicken and chocolate chip cookies. I drew a picture of a turkey and cut it out. It had feathers all over it. I named it Ringo.

Destiny Davis

I will go out with my daddy and we will find a turkey. I will be real quiet and hide up in a tree. Will shoot one with a 30-30. I will get a real big net and pick him up with it. Dad will fry it for 30 minutes, then cut some pieces off of it to eat. We have pizza and chocolate cake, too. My whole family will be there, even Abby. She’s my baby sister. I will help my dad clean up the feathers. I don’t eat the feathers.

Vaughn Templeton

I want to go to a fancy restaurant and eat turkey. I will order fish and a big bowl of ice cream too. All of my family will go with me. We will play video games there, too. We celebrate Thanksgiving so we can all go out together as a family and can meet the chef and stuff. I get to put stuff in my soup there.

Christopher Sheets

My dad takes his bow and arrow and hides up in a tree. He tries not to shoot it in the head, but sometimes he does. Next, he will take all the feathers off. He will put really hot water in a big pot. When it looks steamy and is 76 degrees, it’s done. He will let it cool off a little bit before we eat it. We will have burgers and hot dogs and fries and sometimes corn. After we eat, we will all give presents to each other. Then we will go outside and play sports.

Fate Wilson

Once I went to Kentucky with my daddy and I saw a deer in the morning and at noon I saw eight turkeys. My daddy and me will go hunting again. My daddy will put him over his shoulder and carry him home. I will go home to cook the turkey. It looks really good when it’s all fluffed up and it’s bones are sticking out. We cook him one hour. It will be a biggin. Then I’ll go over to grandma Nancy’s house and have a feast. I make an apple pie every time.

Victoria Woody

Me and daddy will shoot a turkey in the woods. I will shoot it with my bow and arrow. I will take his nose, his feet and his feathers off. My mom will bake him in a really hot oven for 30 minutes. When you see a little bit of bones sticking out, he’s ready to eat. Then I will put cherry around it. We will have meat, donuts and bananas with it. Mom will put this cloth on the table. My family and my friend Juliet are coming. After we eat we will all wash our hands and take a bath.

Jordan Boniel

I want me and daddy to go to the woods and look for a turkey. I will peek through a little bush until we see a turkey. Daddy will get out his pistol and shoot it and chop off its feathers with a knife. Mommy will put it in a hot pan and cook it in the oven for ten minutes at five degrees. When our stove beeps, I will take it out and we will eat it. OUr whole family comes to eat with us. Then we will all go out and swim in nana’s pool.

Olivia Dearman

Me and my mommy and uncle Ryan will go shopping for a turkey. We will get a medium one. Mommy will put him in a pan and fry it for about 20 days. He’s done when he’s burned. We will have applesauce and peas. They are good for you. I want chocolate cake with rainbow sprinkles too. Mommy lets me do anything I want, so I’ll probably eat Thanksgiving dinner while I watch CSI Miami on TV. I love that show! I like Thanksgiving because you get to eat somebody else’s house.

Trinity Sanders

On Thanksgiving I love to eat turkey, mashed potatoes and brown gravy. We eat at our nana’s house and it’s a blast! Nobody tells me how to get a turkey, but I’ll ask. I’d like to get it with a bow and arrow. I’d take the pointed arrow and cut his feathers off with my scissors. Then I’ll cut him open and fry him in the pot. There’s turkeys in my nana’s woods, but sometimes I think there’s bears.

Haley Kirby

I will go into the woods with my daddy. We will climb up in a tree and shoot me a turkey with a sniper gun. Then, I will cut his fur off and drag him home in my buggy. I will put salt and pepper on him and put him in a big pan and fry him for five and a half minutes. My frying pan beeps when he’s done. I will eat ice cream and roll with it. My grandpa and my momma and me will be there. My momma will decorate the house with sparkles. Thanksgiving is all about turkeys’

Zechariah Hayes

My momma would never kill a turkey. I told her not to. Daddy will draw a circle and go to the pet store and get a turkey. Then, he will put it in the circle and cut its beak off and its hair off. Momma will cook it for about three hours. It’s round with no head on it and it’s done. Then, I’ll put it in the refrigerator for a while to let it cool off so we can eat it. We will eat it outside in our own chairs. Then, we will put a heart around the table and we will all wear bibs, if mamma buys them. It she doesn’t, we will just deal with it.

Megan Gunter

Me and momma and daddy want to go to the woods and find a turkey. He will be a big, fat one, about 100 pounds. Daddy will shoot it with his shotgun and cut off it’s feathers with his knife. He will put him on the back of his truck and take him home. Momma will grill it for four minutes. When it’s done, she will put dip out for us, usually steak sauce. We will have corn and carrots. We won’t have dessert because momma will be tired from all that cooking. I like to eat turkey on Thanksgiving.

Nicholas Bell

When it’s Thanksgiving I am going out into the woods and take a gun with me. First, I’ll make a tree house and I will go up in the tree house. When I see a turkey I will shoot it and drag it back to the truck. I will cut it’s feathers all off with my knife. I will take it to a shop and ask them if they will cook it. After they cook it, I will take it back home and we will eat it. Mom don’t like to cook turkeys. My uncles Brandon, Todd, Lonnie, Grayson and Taylor will eat with us. I can eat a bunch of food!

I’ll put salt and pepper on the turkey and put him on the grill for 1,400 hours. I’ll put him on a plate with mashed potatoes and gravy. We will eat pie and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Then we will wash the dishes and then I’ll go play with all of my cousins.

I would go to the woods to get a turkey. I would take it home and cook it. Next, I would get the feathers off and then cook it in the oven for eight minutes on five degrees. When it is done, I would eat it with mashed potatoes, macaroni and pumpkin pie for dessert. Then I would go play outside with my brother, Landon.

  • Big_South_Fork_2.jpg The River WILD!

The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River winds its way through the 125,000 acres of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area before flowing into the Cumberland River and Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. It’s a free-flowing river, with no dams to control release of the water, but the scenery and the magnificent rock formations make it a favorite of paddling enthusiasts who watch the weather to see if they can get out and explore areas that are hard to reach by foot.

  • farmer's market opening.jpg Farmer's Market opens for business June 2

The Cumberland County Farmer’s Market will officially open the growing season as it has every year since 1978.  This year’s “opening” will be Saturday, June 2, at the traditional location on Livingston Rd., next to the fairgrounds. Selling will begin early (6:30 a.m. or so), although some vendors may set up a few hours later in order to provide the freshest vegetables picked just that morning. There is usually a good selection until well after noon.

  • Around the Town: Children's letters to God

I received the cutest e-mail earlier this week and could not resist sharing it with Chronicle readers. The email contains a list of letters that children have written to God. I found them to be quite hilarious and feel sure you will as well. Please pardon the spelling as the notes were typed as the children wrote them:

  • pleasant hill ramblings.jpg Pleasant Hill Ramblings: Spring Festival celebrates inaugural event

After six weeks of rainstorms missing the town, Saturday morning dawned with a drizzly rain, needed, but not that day. Always optimistic, the volunteers went to work setting up the festival, and by the 10 a.m. starting time, there was no more rain. The PH Ensemble, led by Bob Savage, began the day with a variety of melodies.
