Wharton Nursing Home celebrates resident centenarians

It is rare to find those who have lived to be 100 years old. Wharton Nursing Home in Pleasant Hill is proud to currently be called home to four residents that have lived to be a century and older.

Myrtle Dean, age 100, says it is important to keep the memory strong. She does this by telling stories and recalling old memories. Myrtle has two sons that she is very proud of. Myrtle says she is grateful to have lived to be 100 years old. Although she feels that it is just another day, she also feels very lucky. “Life is life, you take what you get,” says Myrtle.

Ella Frances Thompson is another resident at the age of 100. She is an amazing woman and the staff is honored she has chosen Uplands Retirement Village to call home. In 1937, Frances was commissioned by the Congregational Church and sent to the Philippines to be a teacher of Christian ethics and Bible at Silliman University, and then in 1941 she was sent to a Japanese internment camp. In 1972, after 35 years, Frances returned home to the U.S.A. to live in Pleasant Hill, TN. Nevertheless, her work did not stop there as she has continued to help others. She has given hours of service to her church, Uplands Retirement Village and the wider community. “This world needs so much of what God’s word promises. I am very glad I was given the opportunity by the American Mission Board to teach in the Philippines,’” says Frances.

Margaret Booton is celebrating her 101st birthday this year. She is originally from Woodbridge, New Jersey, where her grandfather built the First Congressional Church in 1879. Margaret has a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Wayne Sheely, and 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret moved to Uplands Retirement Village in Pleasant Hill in 2001. Carol and Wayne are also members of Uplands Retirement Village, and just built a house a half mile away from Margaret. Margaret does not think living to such an old age is all it’s cracked up to be. “When your hearing and vision start to go, it makes it difficult,” says Margaret.

At 103 years old, Grace Burdett is the oldest of the Wharton residents. Grace wakes up every morning with a plan of what she is going to do that day. She gets up with a gospel song in her head every morning and keeps it with her the rest of the day. The hardest thing about living to such an old age for Grace has been seeing her children go first. Of seven children, Grace has only one left, but 116+ grandchildren that she is very proud of. Grace says, “You’ve got to be strong to get through.” She is thankful she has been blessed with such good health. Grace’s biggest hope right now is to get into the new Wharton Homes. She says, “Uplands is a great organization with wonderful people.”

Wharton Nursing Home is a service of Uplands Retirement Village in Pleasant Hill, TN. Uplands Retirement Village is a continuing care retirement community offering independent living, assisted living and intermediate nursing care. The construction of the new Wharton Homes is on schedule to be completed in early 2010. For more information, please visit www.uplandsvillage.com or call us at (931) 277-3518.
