Holmes, Todd named exhibitors at Backdoor Gallery
Photographer Joel Holmes and Paul Todd, wood artist, will be the January exhibitors at the Cumberland Art Society Backdoor Gallery, 186A S. Walnut Ave., Cookeville. An opening day reception will be held Sunday, Jan. 3, 1-4 p.m. The exhibit will run through Jan. 31 and may be viewed Monday-Friday, noon to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 1-4 p.m.
Holmes specializes in black and white photography. He never went to photography school; instead he relies on photography clubs, self-study, and practical experience to learn his art. Around 1995, he changed his career by returning to his first love, photography.
Raised in New England, Holmes’ interest in photography began when he was ten years old. He started with a Brownie box camera and as his knowledge and experience expanded, so did his cameras. He graduated from Ottawa University with a BA degree in business administration. After his Navy discharge he was employed by the railroad and resided in four Midwest states. In 2003 he retired from his self-owned tax practice and moved to Tennessee.
Holmes stated, “I am absolutely thrilled with the art and artists of Middle Tennessee. Having made many visits to art shows, I believe that Tennessee’s artists are among the best in the world. I would like to see the artists of the Upper Cumberland region become known worldwide. We need more art shows, galleries, and places for artists to develop their art and to sell it.”
His creative process begins with his eyes, searching for that perfect picture. By walking his land he can find panoramic views of the valley to a one-inch wildflower. Several rolls of film may be used on the same subject to get the perfect picture. Holmes spends a lot of time on his pictures, from taking the picture, to matting and framing for final display and sale.
Holmes has shown his pictures at Poets coffee shop, The Way With Coffee shop, Cumberland Art Society, and the First Tennessee Bank. He has also participated in the Cookeville Art Prowl for the past six years.
Paul Todd is a self-taught wood artist who has expanded his knowledge through workshops and demonstrations. He has also worked in leather art and was president of the Minneapolis Leather Guild in 1982. Todd, past owner of a technical illustration business, used high-end computer programs to produce technical two and three-dimensional images and animations.
Todd’s efforts are currently focused on wood turning to produce art objects. He prefers to create objects of simple shapes and forms that allow the woods grain and texture to come out. He states, “After all, the beauty of the wood was already in the wood before I got it, and all I do is let it out.”
An experienced exhibitor, Todd took first place at a national exhibition of leather art in 1981. He has shown his wood art at religious conferences, the Cumberland County fair, the Sutton Store in Granville, and the Titusville, Florida library. One of his pieces was selected as ‘turning of the week’ on the American Association of Woodturners web site. Todd has also won awards for his technical illustrations from Design Magazine and Corel Draw, a software company.
Todd is currently a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the Cumberland County Woodturners and the Upper Cumberland Art Alliance. He is a former member of Florida’s Space Coast Woodturners.
