Being a Vol for a Day was a thrill
Attending the United Fund Kickoff lunch and auction proved to be a very wise decision on my part. My husband, two friends and myself, being Vol fans, won the bid for the "Vol for a Day" package. Not sure what to expect, we thought we would be in a tour group, just hoping to get up close to Coach Fulmer. We were all more than delighted with our day.
It started off with a tour of the Hall of Fame in the sports complex with Kerri, a very pleasant young woman who made the four of us feel quite welcome. She took her time and tolerated our many questions and constant picture taking. After the Hall of Fame, we viewed the indoor and outdoor practice fields and Kerri explained everything we were seeing. Next was the weight room, which was very impressive — and just think, Peyton Manning had worked up a sweat in that very room!
Next, we met Judy Jackson, associate director of Student Welfare (better known as team "mom"). What a treat she was. She kept us entertained with stories and details of what daily living is like for these young men. After the players and coaches finished their afternoon meetings, we actually met some of them. And then it happened! Coach Phillip Fulmer! In person!
We met him, and he signed my 1998 National Championship Commemorative Football, and shook our hands. We got to see his office and the meeting rooms and learned a lot about the internal workings of the athletic department at UT. Did you know that the athletic department has about 500 employees? This place is huge!
Our next surprise was meeting Vicky Fulmer. What a wonderful person she is. After being led to the sidelines of the practice field — up close and personal, we enjoyed two hours of watching the team practice and listening to Judy Johnson and Vicky Fulmer tell wonderful stories of some of the travels with the team. We watched Eric Ainge practice. Inky Johnson was there, full of determination and good spirits. Several of the players smiled, waved and said hello. We felt like we were truly "Vols" for the day.
I will always remember this day and will watch the games with a new sense of what it is like to be a part of the Volunteer family. Oh heavy sigh, what a day! Just to let you know, I think the United Fund will auction off this item again next year, and I will be bidding against you.
