Elks Club welcomes new member

By Ken Steadman / Chronicle contributor

The Cumberland County Elks Lodge 2751 meets the first and third Thursdays of each month. New members are always initiated during the third Thursday meeting after receiving indoctrination the previous Monday. Exalted Ruler Gene Maher stated, "The Elks feel that it is very important that all new candidates and their mates attend a brief indoctrination before becoming members. This meeting provides some history of the organization, explains our community activities, invites active participation, and allows time for questions. It establishes some solid background to encourage personal involvement before they become full-fledged members in the Elks Lodge."

Calvin Smart became the newest Elk member in November. Smart was born in Marshfield, WI. He spent 37 years with United Parcel Service before retiring and moving to the area with his wife, Susan. They moved to Cumberland County two weeks after 9/11 and Smart comments that he will never forget the eventful timing.

Membership in the Elks is open to men and women who are 21 years of age or older, United States citizens, and believe in God. The Elks have numerous programs that benefit both youth and adults in the community. They also have many monthly social activities that are open to the public.

You may obtain more information about the Elks by calling 484-0150 or stop by the lodge for a personal tour. The lodge is located at 1145 Genesis Road.
