Apartment fire displaces five families

Fire Wednesday night gutted one unit and displaced five families at the Leisure Apts. on Hwy. 127 N at the intersection of Fredonia Rd., according to the Cumberland County Fire Department.

The fire is believed to have started in the area of an apartment of Destiny Phillips and Carol Collison. Fire officials said preliminary investigation led to the cause being a heating unit problem and classified the fire as accidental. Phillips' apartment was gutted by the fire.

Four other units had to be evacuated when Volunteer Energy Cooperative disconnected service to the apartments until repairmen could check out wiring and the furnace. This displaced all occupants of all five apartments.

Residents who were temporarily displaced were Daniel Shepherd and Kelly Jones, Randall Williams and Robin Fogle, Randy Webb and Joshua Weller.

Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly two hours. Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the displaced families with lodging and other needs.

It was expected that power would be restored to the building sometime Thursday.
