Who has the tastiest water?
The Tennessee Association of Utility Districts (TAUD) held the Region Four “Best Tasting Water Contest” at the Del Monaco Winery and Vineyards in Baxter on Feb. 18. Hartsville Water and Sewer was awarded Best Tasting Water in Region Four.
TAUD Region Four consists of Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton Pickett, Putnam, Roane, Smith, Trousdale, and White counties.
Eleven different utilities from Region Four submitted samples of their drinking water for competition. The utilities that entered the contest were: Byrdstown Water Department, Celina Utility System, Crab Orchard Utility District, Hartsville Water and Sewer, Jamestown Gas and Water, Livingston, Northwest Clay Utility District, Smithville Water and Sewer, Sparta Water System, Warren County Utility District, and West Warren-Viola Utility District.
Johnny Walker of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and Joe Woody and Jerry Jolley of the Tennessee Rural Development Agency participated as judges for the contest. Patsy Johnson of Old Gainesboro Road Utility District and Vickie Houston of Crab Orchard Utility District presented the judges with each sample. The drinking water samples were judged on their clarity, bouquet, and taste.
TAUD will be conducting the Best Tasting Water in Tennessee Contest in each of the 11 regions in the next few months. The winner of each region will be submitted in a statewide competition at TAUD’s Annual Meeting at the Memphis Hilton in June. The statewide winner will then compete in Washington, D.C. for the Best Tasting Water in America.
The Tennessee Association of Utility Districts is the oldest rural water association in the nation and serves as the Tennessee chapter of the National Rural Water Association. TAUD serves as a source of training, technical assistance, and acts as a legislative liaison to the over 420 water, wastewater, and natural gas utility members within the state.
