Kinnunen to fill 9th District vacancy

CROSSVILLE — John D. Kinnunen has been elected to fill the unexpired term of late 9th District Commissioner Clyde “Catfish” Cramer.

Kinnunen said, “I want to thank you, the voters of Fairfield Glade, for showing your confidence in electing me as county commissioner for the 9th District of Cumberland County. I will do my best in dealing with issues which directly affect this community and all of its residents. With your help, we can move forward in improving our relationship with the rest of the county by promoting cooperation and remembering that change doesn’t come overnight.”

Kinnunen received 852 votes in the Aug. 2 Cumberland County General Election.

Dennis W. Ashman received 130 votes. Bob Jackson received 610 votes and Josette L. Schlafer received 493 votes.

The Cumberland County Board of Education will see two new members in September following the election of Josh Stone to represent the 4th District and Vivian Hutson to represent the 6th District. Jim Blalock was returned to the board for the 8th District and Richard Janeway, who was unopposed, will continue to represent the 2nd District.

Stone received 292 votes. Gary C. Barnwell received 242 votes and Roger L. Hyder received 129 votes.

Blalock received 350 votes, while Eugene C. Adams received 285 votes.

Hutson was unopposed in the 6th District, receiving 366 votes. Janeway received 318 votes in his uncontested race.

The election results are unofficial until certified by the Cumberland County Election Commission. The commission is scheduled to certify election results Aug. 20. Those elected to the board of education will take their office in September. Kinnunen can participate in the next meeting of the Cumberland County Commission, set for Aug. 20, provided he has been sworn in to office prior to the meeting.
