Rally for the cure creates a 'sea of pink'

On June 16, the Women’s 18-Hole League hosted a “Rally for the Cure.” 91 ladies were decked out in pink and ready to play on a very warm day. The game for the day was a team event in which the two best net balls on each hole were counted. The final team results were as follows:

The first-place team of Molly Hartman, Sherry Stanley, Beth Kreis, and Polli Burdo had a total team score of 104. In second-place, with a total of 109, was the team of Marty Wennermark, Jane Madon, Linda King, and Nancy Ziino. The team of Claire Spangler, Dorothy Roise, Cathleen Purdie, and Marg Beamer secured third place with a team score of 110. With a score of 111, the team of Barbara Alexander, Jan Cashner, Nancy Bowles, and Judy Wicinski took fourth place. In fifth place, after a scorecard playoff, was the team of Zellie Dupree, JoAnn Faulds, and Penny Symington with their score of 118. Also with a score of 118 was the team of Patty Gates, Shirley McMinn, Lydia Horner, and Anna Stark who took sixth place. The seventh-place team, with a score of 119, consisted of Sue Godfrey, Linda Rowe, Katy Stephens, and Kay Davis.

Hole #13 was our “Rally” hole and every lady who landed the green received a pink ribbon Titleist ball. Closest to the pin on the rally hole was Zellie Dupree, who won a great golf bag for her accomplishment.

We had closest to the pin contests on three additional par 3s: on hole #3, Jan Kilar won first place and Marty King took second place; on hole #7, Janet Woodard took first place and Cathleen Purdie took second place; and, on hole #17, only one lady landed the green and that was Marty King – way to go, Marty!

One of our ladies had super bragging rights on hole #10 – Fran Williams scored an eagle 3 on that hole! Congratulations, Fran!

The following ladies scored birdies today: Young-Boon Cantey (2), Marty King (2), Janet Taylor (2), Sherry Stanley (2), Barbara Alexander (2), Marg Beamer, Corinne Custer, Anna Stark, Zellie Dupree, JoAnn Faulds, Judy Olsen, Chris Kencitski, Polli Burdo, Susan Spencer, Claire Spangler, Dale McCunn, Charlene Held, Jane Madon, and Mert May.

Following play, everyone gathered on the veranda at Heatherhurst for cookies and tea and lemonade. While we waited for the scoring results, door prizes were awarded. This year, we also had a prize for the best pink outfit, which was won, hands down, by Young-Boon Cantey, who went above and beyond to dress for the cause!

Steve Kraft donated an awesome golf bag this year and we raised an additional $389 for Susan G, Komen for the Cure by selling tickets. Chris Kencitzski was the lucky recipient of that bag!

Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s rally another great success!

Additional low gross/low net prizes were awarded to league members: In Flight A, Barb Alexander took the low gross award with an awesome 78 and Young-Boon Cantey took low net with a net 65. Sherry Stanley won low gross honors in Flight B with an 83 and Shirley McMinn’s net 61 secured the low net prize. In Flight C, a score of 92 gave Molly Hartman the low gross award and Marg Beamer took low net with a net 61. Lydia Horner clinched the low gross spot in Flight D with a 99 and Sharon Leff ‘s net 67 nabbed the low net prize. In Flight E, Penny Symington’s 102 won low gross and Sheryl Reeser took low net with her net 67.

Perhaps you remember the movie “Short Circuit.” There were 5 robots being developed for the military. One of them, #5, was struck by lightning and he came “alive.” After escaping from his military controllers, he developed a gigantic zest for data. It was quite fun to watch him grow and learn to be human.
