Shopper injured in Dollar Store crash

CROSSVILLE — What was a routine afternoon for customer Brittany Ann Wilson turned into a few moments of shock and horror as a motorist crashed her car through the front door the shopper was preparing to exit.

The impact showered Wilson with broken glass and knocked her, sliding her down an aisle.

The mishap occurred moments before 3 p.m. at the Dollar General Store off Peavine Rd. when a rental car driven by Ann Katherine St. Aubin, 76, of Creek Circle, Fairfield Glade, jumped a concrete curb spot and crashed through the front door.

St. Aubin told investigation officer, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Sgt. Butch LeFebvre, that she was attempting to park in front of the store “when she became distracted by the glare of the sun and pushed the accelerator instead of the brake.”

Tosha Back, 25, a cashier at the the store, described Wilson as a regular customer who works at a nearby store. She had just checked out Wilson’s purchases and walked toward the front door with the customer, when she turned around to return to her register.

“She (Wilson) had opened the door when the car crashed in and knocked her down,” Back said. “I ran and jumped onto the (checkout) counter and then jumped down when the car stopped to check on her. She had glass all over her.”

Wilson was treated for cuts at the scene by Cumberland County Emergency Medical Services personnel, but declined a trip to the hospital in an ambulance. She later was taken to Cumberland Medical Center’s emergency room to be treated for cuts and injury to her leg.

The Dollar General Store was closed by the crash and workers were summoned to the scene to begin repairs so the business could reopen.

As word spread quickly about the crash, off-duty employees and the three who were in the store when the mishap occurred, expressed concern about lost wages during the holiday season.

Repairs were quickly made and the store has reopened.

The vehicle driven into the building was a rental car owned by Enterprise Rentals. The driver’s husband was able to drive the vehicle away.

No estimate of the damage to the store was available.

The board signed a contract with USDA Wildlife Services to remedy the health concerns caused by the large number of geese that have made their home in the resort. A presentation at the Community Center conducted by District Supervisor Keith Blanton, USDA Wildlife Services, provided the FFG Board and members an overview of the health problems due to goose droppings and methods to get the problem under control. TVA and TWRA established Canada geese flocks in Tennessee in the 1960s and 1970s. Hunters take about 20,000 geese per year during the hunting season.
