Dorothy Steen, the newest member of the 90-Plus Club at the Cumberland Medical Center (CMC) at Fairfield Glade, believes regular exercise has helped her stay healthy all her life. She visits at the Wellness Complex at least four days a week.
“I take part in the Senior Tune Up aerobics class on Tuesday, Thursday, and sometimes on Friday. I also participate in the Rocking to the Oldies class on Thursday,” she said.
“I did swim in the pool, but I’ve cut back on that.”
She has been a member of the Wellness Complex since she and her husband moved to Fairfield Glade in 2007.
Besides the exercise, Steen enjoys the fellowship of other Wellness Complex members that she sees regularly.
She has been active all of her life, as was her husband before he passed away in 2009, shortly before he turned 90, following a fall that broke a replacement hip.
“When he was younger, my husband encouraged all of our five children to be physically active,” she said. One of her sons has competed in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii, she said proudly.
“My husband and I were avid square and ballroom dancers,” she said. “We lived in Lake Station in northwest Indiana, and danced in all of the major ballrooms in the Chicago, IL area.”
After retirement, but before they moved to Fairfield, they would spend winters in Harlingen, TX.
“We danced and rode bicycles every day,” she said. “It kept us young.”
The 90-Plus Club is made up of persons who have been complex members for at least a year before their 90th birthday. Club members qualify for free membership.
