The Women’s 18-Hole League championship was played on Sept. 22 and 29 on the Brae and Crag courses, consecutively. Course conditions for both days were soggy, but we were thrilled not to be rained out! It’s so hard to believe that another season of play has come to an end, but we closed it out with two fun days of golf. The winners of this year’s championship are as follows:

In Flight A, JoAnn Faulds took the first low gross prize with a combined score of 156 for the two days and Marty King won second low gross with a score of 165. First low net went to Hazel Robinson for her net score of 137 and Mary Runfeldt grabbed second low net with a net 138.

Nancy Martin claimed first low gross honors for Flight B with a score of 174 and Susan Spencer’s 178 got her the second low gross spot. With a net score of 141, Dale McCunn claimed the first low net prize and Corinne Custer took second low net with her net 142.

The award for first low gross in Flight C went to Jacque Vallem who shot 195 for the 2 days. Following closely behind was Barb DesBiens whose score of 196 got her the second low gross award. Jan Cashner had a net score of 144 to win first low net and Julie Kratt took second low net with her net 145.

In Flight D, Alice Swift grabbed the first low gross position with a 201 and Deni Selvig took second low gross with a score of 207. Barb Stecker was the first low net winner with a net 141 and second low net went to Nora Joyce who had a net 147.

Eve Pry was the first low gross winner in Flight E with her rounds’ total of 210 and Eva Day took second low gross with her score of 213. With a net score of 139, Sheryl Reeser claimed first low net and Barbara Lamb won second low net with her net score of 145.

The overall winners of the tournament, and league champions were Marty Wennermark whose score of 153 got her the overall low gross award, and Brenda Davis, who won the overall low net honors with her net score of 132. Way to go, ladies!

On the 22nd, we also had a closest to the pin contest on the Crag. The winner for Flight A was Brenda Davis; for Flight B, Barb DesBiens; for Flight C, Charlene Held; and for Flight E, Darby O’Hara. Unfortunately, no one in Flight D managed to land the green on their hole.

On the 29th, we battled to see who could land their tee shot closest to the line on designated holes on the Brae. Winning that honor for Flight A was Trish Rosenbergh; for Flight B, Corinne Custer; for Flight C, Merrily Klug; for Flight D, Deni Selvig; and for Flight E, Ernie Frye.

The Tin Cup awards are a fun part of our championship. This year, the Tin Cup winners were:

For getting a getting a double bogie on hole #1 of the Crag, Mary Beth Stiglin was the winner out of 22 ladies who had to put their names in the cup.

For being in the woods on hole #6 on the Crag, Sandy Murray was the sole name in the cup.

Ann DeLearie was in the water on hole #9 on the Crag and won out over the 15 other ladies who shared her misery.

Eight ladies managed to have three putts on hole #10 on the Crag, but Sophie Nahold won the prize.

Marion Sherwood was the winner of the four ladies who landed in the sand trap on hole #16 on the Crag.

Mary Manley and Alice Swift shared the honor of being chosen from the 20 ladies who were in the water on hole #4 at the Brae.

Marty King was the winner of the five ladies who made par on hole #8 on the Brae.

On hole #9 at the Brae, five ladies ended up in the woods but Bonnie Herman won the prize.

Mary Listenberger was the lucky lady of 11 who had three putts on hole #14 on the Brae.

On hole #15 on the Brae, Linda Rowe was “rewarded” for being in the sand trap along with 13 other ladies.

Following play on the 29th, we all enjoyed a great luncheon at the Community Center, where we also waited on pins and needles to hear the results of the tournament. Following the announcements for the winners of the championship, the 2009 End of Year awards were given to these ladies:

The most improved golfers awards went to Young-Boon Cantey in A Flight with an improvement of 5 strokes; Mary Jo Mayberry in B Flight with an improvement of 4.9 strokes; Jackie Vallem in Flight C with an improvement of 4 strokes; Sharon Sheets in D Flight with an improvement of 5.2 strokes, which also got her the award for most improved in the league; and Penny Symington in E Flight with an improvement of 4.6 strokes.

The low gross winners for the year were JoAnn Faulds in A Flight with an 80.4 average score; Dale McCunn in B Flight (90.6 average); Sophie Nahod in C Flight (97.3 average); Merrily Klug in D Flight (103.5 average); and Sheryl Reese in E Flight (108.5 average).

Low net winners for the year were Marty Wennermark and Hazel Robinson in a tie in A Flight with 68.1 average net scores; Karen Toomey in B Flight (70 average); Lachricia Hunt in C Flight (70 average); Lydia Horner in D Flight (70.8 average); and Marian Sherwood in E Flight (71.8 average).

We had five eagle winners this year: Connie Fusco got an eagle on Brae hole #6 on July 21; Sherry Stanley and Katy Stephens both had eagles on July 21 on Brae hole #10; Jacque Vallem had her eagle on Aug. 16 on Crag hole #15; and Fran William had an eagle on June 16 on Brae hole #10.

Birdie winners for the year were:

In A Flight, Marty Wennermark, Young-Boon Cantey, JoAnn Faulds, and Susan Spencer all had 11 birdies! Way to play, ladies!

In B Flight, Corinne Custer and Susan Summers each had five birdies.

In C Flight, Julie Kratt had six birdies.

In D Flight, Eva Day, Jo Swilling, and Jan Kilar each had three birdies.

In E Flight, Sheryl Reeser, Penny Symingon and Linda King each had two birdies.

Once again, Deni Selvig was the only lady who thought nothing was more important than golf and thus won the perfect attendance award!

The annual election of officers was also held at the luncheon and the 2010 officers for the league will be: President, Deni Selvig; First Vice President, Sue Orris; Second Vice President, Molly Hartman; Third Vice President, Barb DesBiens; Secretary, Ernie Frye; Treasurer, Jackie Vallem; and Social, Mary Beth Stiglin.
