Glade friendships are very special as we all come from different parts of the U.S. and begin our life in this community. New friendships are made everyday, but there are some that have "remember when" times. Twenty years ago, we were a part of the working world with a different set of friends and activities. Then we retired and moved to the Glade. Our lives were different.
I have golfed with three women I met 16 years ago here in Fairfield. None of us had known each other before moving here. We have an original name — Friday Morning Golf. If it rains, there is "Friday Morning Breakfast" we can do.
Through the years we have shared our lives together. We have laughed and cried with one another and fellowshipped over meals and games. We have prayed for one another and cherished the friendships.
Several weeks ago we did our annual event with our husbands. They all are golfers, some more that others. I read the article the Twigs sent several weeks ago and enjoyed the pictures and challenges. I thought about our group.
Our year-end party was fun and we enjoyed a beautiful day. The golf? Well, we did not have a game as usual, because there were too many circumstances to work around. I had an injured wrist and had to tape it to play; another gal had a bad finger from a golf cart accident. The other two women were in good shape but still complained about their game. The men were a different story. One was dizzy when he bent over, so his wife had to put the T in the ground. (He still chipped in!) The other avid golfer had overdone it the day before and, because of a sore shoulder, he was a ball spotter. The third and fourth guys golf several times a year, if they have to, and both of them did all right when their balls were visible.
We all scored well when we went into Druid to eat following the afternoon game. There were no complaints and we were thankful that we were all together another year here in beautiful Fairfield Glade. I know there are many special friendships like this in the Glade. It is great to make these new friends and still have those special ones that are miles away.
