With the end of yet another season the Men’s 18-Hole League held their awards breakfast at Legend’s Restaurant on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Dan Richardson, league president, welcomed players from both the A and B divisions. Dan then introduced our featured speaker, Steve Kraft, director of Golf.
Steve informed the group that it was still a good year financially, even though the number of rounds were down by approximately 7,200 going into October. Mowing and disease factors were more of a problem due to the rainy season; however, there were no major set backs. Steve also mentioned that a new irrigation system for Stonehenge was scheduled for 2010. Stonehenge will close for the winter on Nov. 9 and reopen for play on March 1. Let’s hope winter co-operates with the plan.
Steve thanked the league for their Patriots Day Golf donation and stated that Fairfield Glade players had the third highest contribution for all courses in Tennessee. Steve, along with all the course staffs, deserve a pat on the back for the excellent job done maintaining the courses through an unusually wet season. Job well done!
Jerry Casada, league treasurer, reported the financial state of the league as solid with a substantial amount to carry over to next year. Jerry’s term ended this year, and Mark Carle was unanimously elected to be the new league treasurer. Thanks, Jerry, for the great job. The league could not function without the efforts of a few like you.
Rich Haycox, VP of the B division, welcomed his group and acknowledge the following players for outstanding achievements in 2009. Bill Walker low gross (73), Ron Cashner low net (52), Ron Cashner most individual points (81), Rick Reiss most match points (25), Ron Cashner most weekly winnings ($67.50), Jim Legg most skins winnings ($69.55), and the U.S. Congress most arrogant morons (535).
Awards were presented to Joe Ross for his hole-in-one and to Chuck Rothwell most improved golfer (7.5 strokes better).
Winning first place in the seasonal match play was Team Trotter. Players were Rich Trotter, Chuck Beacham, Chuck Boes, Bill Murphy, John Patterson, Bob Stackhouse, and Doug Watts. First place in the seasonal points championship was won by Team West. Players were Duane West, Wayne Baker, Ron Cashner, Denny Fisher, Rick Reiss, Chuck Rothwell, Ken Schrader, and Bill Walker. Rich Catterall was introduced as B division’s new vice president. Congratulations, Rich. Rich Haycox — for a job well done, and Rich Catterall — for volunteering to continue the tradition. John Whitney, VP of the A Division, announced that the Pinseeks would begin play on Nov. 4. Drop an e-mail to John if you’d like to play winter golf on Wednesdays.
John presented the awards to the seasonal match play and seasonal stroke play teams. Three places were paid in each category. Only the winners will be mentioned here. I get sick of typing names. Next year everyone gets a number. The 2009 Division A match play champions, “The Dream Team,” captained by one of the nicest guys on the planet, Dick Hampton, was comprised of Dave Bouque, Gene Bowman, Tom Brooks, John Kreis, Dale McDonald, Al Moenck, Jack Olsen, Bill Powell, and John Rogers. The 2009 Division A stroke play champions, the team with the right stuff, captained by another super guy, Al Bonn, and an equally impressive team comprised of Jerry Allard, Bob Cope, Jerry Dumbauld (I got the spelling right this time), Paul Forkapa, Jim McNutt, Carl Nordeen, Bob Takac, John Vandell, and Bob Wardard. Congratulations to all! And to all a good night. Have a great winter.

FG First Baptist Church all smiles as their 'ship comes in'
Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church was right in the path of the right-of-way for the new widening project for Peavine Road. With a new site selected and the new church building well under way, on Feb. 6, TDOT officially presented Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church a check for $1,435,550 for their property.

Betty Smith of Lake Tansi won a six-month membership for the Cumberland Medical Center Wellness Complex at Crossville because she successfully completed a Holiday Challenge to maintain or lose weight from Nov. 24 through Jan. 4.

ENJOYING NATURE: How ‘fur’ would you go to get a great coat?
I saw in one of the magazines, that I sometimes read, that the Tennessee Fur Harvesters Association was having a fur sale in Crossville. “Fur harvesters” is another word for trappers. Trappers try to catch fur bearing animals like coyote, mink, and beaver for fun and profit. I talked Gary into going with me to see what we could learn.
