Paton is 'Resident of the Year' at RHA
The final dinner meeting of 2009 was highlighted with great entertainment and special awards of recognition. Don DeBerry, our 2009 president, recognized the much appreciated efforts of this year’s board members and read the slate of new candidates for 2010. The new slate of officers was approved by acclimation with only one side-note of objection, as Vince Richardson provided the comedic nay vote. Don then passed the gavel to Mary Coates, the newly elected president of RHA for 2010.
Larry Backus, representing the RHA President’s Committee, would announce the recipient of the RHA Outstanding Resident of the Year Award, but first presented two unexpected awards. With the assistance of Bob Toby, Larry’s co-chair for the RHA Benefit Golf Tournament, Don DeBerry was presented with a tongue-in-cheek tennis racquet that looked more like one of Paul Bunyon’s snow shoes. The “high-tech-state-of-the-art racquet” was in recognition of Don’s steadfast leadership as RHA President for 2009, RHA’s 36th year in Fairfield Glade.
When the RHA President’s Committee had met to review the nominations by residents for Outstanding Resident of the Year, the presidents voted unanimously to create an additional award. The RHA Community Achievement Award would not be made each year, but would be awarded to special individuals for outstanding community service when deemed appropriate by the President’s Committee. The first such award was then presented to Bob Sharp and accepted by Nan Sharp, his widow. Bob’s service to Cumberland County and Fairfield Glade included board membership for Cumberland County Playhouse and Hospice, as well as fund-raising chair of the Continuing Care Retirement Committee that resulted in the recent ground breaking for the Lutheran Good Samaritan Continuing Care facility. Bob was also a past president of RHA during two years in the 1990s.
Larry thanked residents for their many outstanding nominations for RHA Outstanding Resident of the Year and proceeded to read part of the written nomination for this year’s recipient before announcing the name: She had served as president of RHA, Fairfield Glade Garden Club, Fairfield Glade Women’s Club, and United Methodist Women. Special note was made of her long list of church related activities and her “Friendship Garden” that served to propagate many other gardens in Fairfield Glade. The nomination concluded, “Physical courage and spiritual strength could be emphasized in describing this remarkable lady…. She also continues to remain active despite her bouts with illness. This is a person of uncommon fortitude who continues to demonstrate leadership in many ways.… Our RHA 2009 Outstanding Resident of the Year…JoAnne Paton.
One of the most popular shows in Pigeon Forge is headlined by Patty Waszak; singer, songwriter, musician, and comedienne. Patty, accompanied by her husband, capped off the evening with a dynamic performance and a fitting conclusion to the RHA year.

FROM THE DESK OF: Budget committee's tax rate/budget recommendation is rejected by commission
At this month’s regular full County Commission meeting, the resolution to establish the tax rate for Fiscal Year 2010-2011 was defeated with 6 yes votes and 12 no votes. Without an approved tax rate, discussion of the budget appropriations was futile since there is no levy to pay for the proposed expenditures.

PATCHES OF LIFE: You’re full of beans
I stepped on the scale and it read 102,912 beans. I had never wondered what I weighed in beans, but I recall being told at one time I was full of beans. I really don’t know if the scale was accurate and I did have my shoes on so it may be a bean or two off.
