5th Annual Black Ball held Feb. 2

CROSSVILLE — The old adage “All dressed up with nowhere to go,” did not apply to the patrons of the 5th Annual Black Ball held Saturday Feb. 2, 2013, at Nick’s Restaurant and Banquet Facilities. The brainchild of Dave Matlock of Matlock Entertainment, the Black Ball was originally organized to give the people of the Upper Cumberlands the opportunity to have a formal soirée with the added interest of any profit beyond what was needed for the party’s budget going directly to charity.

Four non-profits were supported at the Black Ball this year, the ALS Association (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Upper Cumberland Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Alzheimer’s Association, and Heart of the Cumberland Grief Center.

“It’s a lot of hard work. But, look. Everyone is having a great time,” said Matlock, enamored by the turn out. “And everybody wins.”

Dave Matlock’s idea is presented as a means of showing that anyone can give back to the community and have a great time doing it. The organizations receive a check based on a percentage reward. Attendees place their tickets into designated pails and based on the percentage of tickets in each pail and the amount of overflow, Matlock writes each organization a check.

Matlock Entertainment’s objective, “To promote local charities through good friends and great times." And that is exactly what Matlock achieves.

Ted McWilliams, executive director of Upper Cumberland Susan G. Komen for the Cure, said, “Being a non-profit, which retains seventy-five cents of every dollar locally for our mission, we are very blessed to have the support of the Black Ball event and blessed to see support of community members for these events that return back to the community."

The dress code is strictly enforced to add to the Black Ball’s grandeur. Black attire was required with white as this year’s chosen accent color. In a sea of black suits and little black dresses, there were white feather boas and white silk ties. Even the signature beverage was a Twisted White Russian.

Cookeville Photo Booth added so much felicity to the fun setting up with delightful props for anyone who wanted a memorable photo strip taken.

The Black Ball lulls its patrons from even the deepest of winter slumbers and makes for a perfectly proper celebration. Matlock Entertainment specializes in party and event planning in the Upper Cumberlands and is also responsible for The White Party, which is held midsummer. Details regarding Matlock Entertainment events can be found on its Facebook community page.
