CROSSVILLE —
Rotarian Rick Moore presented Stone Memorial High School student Dalton Delk with a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Participation in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Program. Interact Club members Katy Bilbrey and April Hamby attended their first Rotary Club meeting. Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting and are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance. Yearly, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill.
Kim Wattenbarger, Stone Memorial High School Librarian and Co-Sponsor of the SMHS Interact Club spoke on the activities and projects her students have been working on. Ms. Wattenbarger reported that recent service projects have been: working the Mistletoe Market Place, Christmas on The Mountain, and acquiring formal wear for prom using The Dress Closet. She is very proud to say 16 students will be attending The District Conference Of Interact this March.
Melissa Keyes, Physical Sciences teacher discussed her work with the SMHS Freshman Academy. She spoke from her heart of the pure joy of sparking an interest in science in her students. Using simple household products she gives the students a hands on learning experience. After hearing her speak club members asked for ways the public could help. Ms. Keyes requested donation of items for the class from alligator clips, wheels and gears of any type, small radios or small appliances (working or not) hydrogen peroxide, marbles, plastic cups, any science magazine, goggles and aprons, lab breakers, test tubes, as well as tinker toys and vinegar. For a complete list please contact Ms. Keyes at Stone Memorial High School 484-5767.
