A busy 2009 planned at the Tennis Center

After a very successful year in 2008, we’re off to a great start in ’09.

On Jan. 17, our ladies 3.0 Super Senior team hosted Super Seniors from Tellico and won all four matches. “I see a noticeable improvement from last fall,” remarked Head Pro/Coach William Taylor. “Individuals are improving their skills and gaining confidence as doubles team players,” all the right ingredients for a successful trip to sectionals in Alabama in March. Several more scrimmages are being set up so all will have a chance to work on using strategy and skills against other teams in a competitive environment.

The “Never Ever” beginner clinics will start on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 1-2 p.m. If you’ve never played tennis or if you haven’t played in a long time, these clinics are for you. Also on Feb. 7 is scheduled a women’s college match between TTU and Arkansas/Little Rock, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 15, the TTU women will play Arkansas State from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Feb. 21, UT Martin men will play UNC Asheville, all at the Tennis Center at approximately 1-6 p.m. All matches are open to the public for free. UT Martin will also conduct a junior clinic on Friday, Feb. 20, from 5-7 p.m., and the team will conduct an adult clinic on Saturday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. There will be a cost for the clinics.

Finally, on Feb. 27-28, the FG Women’s Super Senior team will host Maryville for a series of scrimmage matches.

Other events planned for the first half of 2009 are a Tennis Block Party on May 2, the Bucky Cantrell Clay Court Championships May 28-31, and Breakfast at Wimbledon on July 4.

Ongoing clinics include Stroke of the Day on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to noon; and Skills of the Week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. Adult and Junior camps are being planned for the spring and summer.
