Patti Welch, Don Beane and Margo Carroll are putting on their walking shoes to take part in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60-mile walk that benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Peggy Welch will also participate as a food services crew member to support the walkers.
"We decided to get involved after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. We want to make a personal difference to help fight the disease and find a cure," said Peggy.
All participants in the walk, set for Oct. 23-25 in Atlanta, commit to raising at least $2,300 for the cause.
Peggy told her story to Mike Leath, manager of Potter's Ace Hardware store on Lantana Road. He recently presented the team with a $500 donation and a fundraiser is scheduled for today to raise additional donations.
"It is very rewarding to be able to help with this important cause," said
Leath.
Potter's Ace Hardware's Lantana Road location will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with hot dogs and beverages served.
"We are very grateful to Mike and his staff. It is so heartwarming to have one of our local businesses supporting our fund raising efforts for the Breast Cancer 3-Day," said Peggy. "With Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust as beneficiaries of the Breast Cancer 3-Day, we know we're helping to ensure funding is available for important research, education and community health programs."
Breast cancer will affect one in eight women in the United States. An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the U.S. in 2009, and about 40,610 deaths are expected.
Women can reduce their risk of breast cancer by taking additional steps to stay well by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a well-balanced diet, and engaging in physical activity 45 to 60 minutes on five or more days of the week. Also, limiting alcohol consumption can reduce breast cancer risk –one or more alcoholic beverages a day may increase risk.
