Brown Elementary School update

With the school year coming to a close on June 5, Brown Elementary School is proudly looking back over the school year. Statewide TCAP testing was completed at the end of April. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed their time, especially the proctors.

We are grateful for our wonderful volunteers, who contribute every week to the students and staff at Brown Elementary School. On April 29, our volunteers enjoyed a lunch together to recognize them for their contributions. We appreciate all of our community members who have donated their time, resources, and talents to further the educational success of our students and school.

On April 22, children of all ages participated in the annual school community clean up and beautification project. As a part of Earth Day remembrance, students picked up litter on the school grounds, planted flowers and shrubs, and mulched plants. Wal-mart nursery specialists Christy Norris, Ruth Moreland, and Linda Hoover brought plants, soil, and mulch to the school and joined students in their project. We greatly appreciate the efforts of these ladies and the donation from Wal-mart.

Brown Elementary School second- and third-grade students recently had the privilege of meeting Todd Howell, WBIR-TV chief meteorologist, and learning about different aspects of weather. Howell visited the school in April to speak to students about the water cycle and different forms of precipitation. He also instructed the classes about safety procedures in inclement weather, especially in the event of a tornado.

On April 28, the student art show was presented, under the guidance of art teacher Gwen Tayse. The spring choir program, led by Marty Gibson, was performed on this evening as well. The PTO also held its monthly meeting and officer nominations for the 2009-2010 academic year.

We have many special activities and programs scheduled through the commencement of the school year, including field days and recognition programs for all grade levels. June 5 is the last day of school for the year, with a 10 a.m. dismissal.
