CROSSVILLE —
Crossville Police have identified the two persons seriously injured in Tuesday's airplane crash at Crossville Memorial Airport. Both are continuing to be treated for their injuries in the trauma section at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
The pilot is identified as Phillip Morris Cashmer, 72, of Winter Haven, FL, according to Ptl. Terry Graham's report. His passenger was his wife, Marian. The pilot was partially ejected in the crash and both suffered head and/or internal injuries.
The crash occurred moments after taking off from the Crossville airport around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The plane went down just outside the airport's security fence, landing upright in a ravine near Old Hwy. 70, within site of the county's convenience center.
Debbie Sherrill, a county resident, was driving in the area of the crash and said she saw the plane go down, but couldn't immediately see where it landed. When she turned onto Earl Jones Rd., she spotted it and called 911.
She stated she watched the plane take off and then suddenly spiral back down to the ground.
The plane is a Sonex — a light-weight, metal, low-wing two seat homebuilt aircraft, and was one of several at the recent air show at the airport.
The couple were taken by ambulance to the airport where they were transferred to helicopters for the flight to the Chattanooga trauma center.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and Federal Aviation Administration were notified of the crash.
