CROSSVILLE —
Authorities believe the fire that destroyed a building at The Sportsman's Club on Drew Howard Rd. was accidental and not intentionally set, according to reports.
The fire was reported Tuesday night around 9:45 p.m. and when Fairfield Glade Safety Officer Charles Laxton arrived on the scene minutes later, the building was already on the ground.
"It appeared to have been burning for some time, as it was on the ground when I arrived," Laxton wrote in his report.
When Laxton arrived, he found no vehicles in the area, but the gate to the property was unlocked and open. The fire had been reported to authorities through a third party who took a call from an acquaintance and passed the call on to security officers.
It was reported that an explosion was heard in the area around 5 p.m. and there is speculation that one of the propane tanks may have exploded because of the heat generated by the fire.
Cumberland County Sheriff's Arson Investigator Scott Griffin was called two the scene and investigators found several pieces of wiring that appeared to have welded together from an electrical short and it is now believed that a short in the wiring caused the fire.
No one was injured. No estimate on the loss was available.
