Man who steals assault rifle in broad daylight charged
It took over a dozen hours of investigative work over the course of three days but a Meigs County man was finally taken into custody after allegedly walking out of a Crossville pawn shop with an assault rifle tucked beneath his coat.
Jason Paul Baker, 29, 911 Dogtown Rd., Ten Mile, is charged with one count of theft of merchandise less than $1,000 after police recovered the gun two days after the theft.
It all began last Monday around 1 p.m. when employees of Dave's Pawn Shop called city police to report a man and woman had entered the store with the male asking about hunting rifles. He was directed across the store to where the weapons were on display.
As the woman exited the store, the man walked over, picked up a rifle, put it under his jacket and quickly walked out of the pawn shop.
Store officials immediately notified police that the man and woman had left the business in a white Chevrolet Astro van. After conducting a hurried inventory, it was determined that an AK-47 assault rifle had been stolen.
Over the next two days police tracked down the van and the two occupants which led to one witness telling police the main suspect wanted to return the weapon. The suspect was reluctant to meet with investigators because he said he did not want to be arrested.
The investigation led police to Brown's Creek Rd., to E. First St., Dillon St., School St. and an eventual meeting on Lantana Rd. where the weapon was recovered and the suspect taken into custody.
Last Wednesday — two days after his arrest on the theft charge — Baker was arrested on an attachment for failure to appear in court on a drug charge.
