Panel commits to $33K grant match for Crab Orchard

CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County Budget Committee made a $33,000 matching donation commitment to the city of Crab Orchard if a grant is approved to improve its facilities.

City of Crab Orchard Mayor Emmett Sherrill attended a recent budget committee meeting and made the funding request on behalf of the city.

"We want to improve the operation of our EMS and fire. We're applying for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for $267,000 and there's a $33,000 required match for a total of $300,000," Sherrill said.

The Crab Orchard facility hosts Cumberland County EMS ambulance service. The city maintains the building and covers monthly expenses such as utilities and day-to-day expenses.

"I move we go ahead and give them the $33,000 as a one-time donation if they get the grant. I'd rather pay one time for a building then pay for utilities and upkeep," said Mike Harvel, 7th District commissioner.

Terry Carter, 6th District commissioner, supported Harvel's motion and it was unanimously approved.

Sherrill said the city won't know if the grant is approved until sometime between September and November of this year.

The funding request will be budgeted into the county's 2013-'14 fiscal year budget.

County commissioners Allen Foster, 4th District; and Jeff Brown, 8th District; did not attend the meeting.
