CROSSVILLE —
Three young children were removed from a residence and one man arrested on a host of charges — including child abuse/neglect — when Cumberland County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to investigate unsanitary living conditions.
During the safety check, deputies also learned the father was wanted on several unrelated charges and took him into custody.
Leslie Dewayne Martin, 34, 45 Critter Crossing, or 3314 Peavine Rd., was arrested for probation violation, an attachment for failure to appear, an attachment for failure to pay fine, child abuse/neglect, criminal impersonation and obstruction of service of a legal writ or process.
Saturday deputies Sgt. Jason Elmore, David Moore, Kevin Phillips and Danny Stone were dispatched to the Critter Crossing address to check on the welfare of the three children.
When officers first approached Martin, he told them his name was Timothy Asperry. Upon further questioning, he admitted he had lied to officers and identified himself as Martin.
Inside the residence, deputies said they discovered several items in plain view that caused the officers alarm over the safety and welfare of the three children present.
In addition to a pungent odor in the house, Phillips wrote in his report, "numerous things were seen in plain view that questioned the children's welfare, including food on the countertops and sink that was rotten and crawling with bugs, drug paraphernalia, no running water and both toilets completely full of human waste."
The Department of Children's Services was notified of the living conditions and responded to the scene.
One of the children reportedly suffers from a heart condition and was supposed to be seen by a heart specialist in April, but that appointment was not kept.
Bond for Martin was set at $21,250 and he is to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court.

Record rainfall floods county
A record rainfall event Sunday flooded city streets and county roads and sent water flowing into some businesses and some homes in Crossville. There were also several reports of houses being struck by lightning in the city and the county. There were no injuries reported in Cumberland County.

Memorial Day ceremony planned
The Cumberland County Veterans Council will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Cumberland County Memorial Veterans Park across the street from the Cumberland County Courthouse. The Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. There will be a guest singer and special guest speakers during the event.

Crossville dog park moving along
The City of Crossville Dog Park at the back of Centennial Park is moving ahead. Some grading has been done in preparation for the installation of the fencing. A water line will be brought over to the park from the restrooms in the nearby picnic area, making it easier for owners to provide fresh water for their pets while they are exercising in the park.

County attorney to send violation letter to bank regarding Guiness Rd. property
Cumberland County attorney Randal Boston was requested by the Health and Safety Standards Board to send a letter of violation and cleanup to Bank of America in regard to an abandoned, dilapidated property in the Breckenridge neighborhood.
