March 1889

+The parlors of the Hotel Hamby witnessed an exciting scene Saturday evening when the case of “Cap” Cline vs. Henry Smith for hog stealing came up before the Shinplaster Society. Although the evidence against the defendant was strong at the outset the defendant’s counsel John Hatfield, soon placed the case in the proper light before his honor and gained the suit. We understand the next meeting will be devoted to the trial of both plaintiff and defense for non-payment of attorney fees.

+The Spring Lawn House is full of northern boarders.

+An opera hall and public library room is the latest enterprise on foot in our village. A stock company proposes to invest in the upper story of Cline & Beadle’s new store and have it fitted up for a public hall and library room.

March 1920

+J.T. Horn is having several rooms of his residence covered with wallboard, which will add greatly to the comfort and pleasing appearance of the home. P.V. Beadle is doing the work.

+Clarence Darrow died in his home in Chicago. He was 80 years old and was the attorney in the Scopes “monkey” trial.

+No one knows what the politics of Herbert Hoover are. Republicans supporting him think he is Republican and the same applies to Democrat supporters. He has no more chance of nomination than if his name had not been mentioned — except that he is being mentioned.

March 1976

+The countywide census completed in February showed the unofficial count of 21,991 people living in the third through eighth districts of Cumberland County. Add to that the count of 6,024 for the first and second districts which make up the city of Crossville and the count could be as high as 25,000. Fairfield Glade made the biggest impact with a total of 912 people.

+Fairfield Glade Lions Club is now a reality. A charter meeting is scheduled for March 22. Officers have been elected. Roy Park is president.
