The National Wild Turkey Federation's (NWTF) Plateau Longbeards chapter received prestigious national awards Feb. 10 at the 36th annual NWTF National Convention and Sport Show for its excellence in providing opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities and received national acclaim for their role in nurturing youth interest and education about the outdoors and an active lifestyle through the NWTF’s JAKES outreach program.
The Plateau Longbeards were honored with the 2011 JAKES Best Event Award with more than 250 participants and received NWTF Wheelin’ Sportmen Awards for the Best Hunting Event and the Best Fishing Event during the NWTF’s National Convention and Sport Show at Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville.
The awards were presented at the NWTF’s Federal Breakfast, which celebrated the theme: “Champions of Outeach.”
The JAKES event was one of more than 1,000 held throughout the nation by NWTF volunteers.
“Thanks to the hard work of these dedicated volunteers, people with disabilities received the opportunity to enjoy spectacular, fun-filled days outdoors,” said Tom Hughes, NWTF assistant vice president for education and outreach programs. “These events provided an outstanding example of what the Wheelin’ Sportsmen program is all about.”
More than 600 youth attended the Plateau Longbeards JAKES event, which required hard work and planning to secure sponsorships and the cooperation of the community.
“The Plateau Longbeards provided a shining example of how JAKES events teach our youth about the outdoors and conservation in a fun-filled, safe environment,” JAKES program coordinator Mandy Harling said.
If you would like more information about the NWTF or to show your support for the Plateau Longbeards, take the time to attend their Hunting Heritage banquet March 17, 6 p.m. at the Cumberland County Community complex.
