LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

February 1889

+All over this mountain plateau the church and school privileges were very poor and scanty until the American Missionary Association began work a few years ago. Now these institutions at Pleasant Hill, Crossville, Pomona, Grandview, Sherwood and elsewhere are doing a great work for all the people both native born and immigrants.

A large northern immigration has come into this section and their enterprise is being seen and felt in all directions. Probably two thirds of the people of Crossville and vicinity are from the north and it is said there are more northern people in this county than any other in Tennessee. They enjoy the bracing but mild Northern climate in a Southland.

+The minstrel band that has startled this community several times with flaming posters advertising their early appearance in our midst, have as yet, failed to appear.

+Hen fruit is cheaper — only ten cents a dozen now.

February 1920

+John Ettien became owner of what is known as the Leggitt farm, six miles west of Crossville. The purchase price of $3,800 cash consists of 237 acres of which close to 100 acres is cleared but not all under cultivation. It is considered one of the most valuable farms in the county.

+The Democrats in Congress are dumb as oysters on business but vocal when it comes to obstruction.

+_____, age 20, of Creston, died after being ill only two days. The doctor said it was locked bowels.

February 1976

+Six more weeks of bad weather we will have here because the groundhog did see his shadow on February 2. The sun was out in full glory to cast a sparkle on the half inch of snow that accumulated on the Plateau in the early evening of February 1, 1976.

+Interest is high in the position of head football coach for the CCHS “Jets.” A total of ten applications have been received and eight have been interviewed.

    A Crossville man has been arrested by city police on three charges — including two felonies — after a domestic dispute escalated into violence and sexual assault, according to police reports.

  • Felony charges filed in domestic assault

    A Monterey man made his first appearance in Cumberland County General Sessions Court last Monday to answer a felony charge relating to a domestic assault that took place Aug. 15 during which a car was allegedly used as a weapon, a knife was pulled by the victim and both sides accused the other of being the aggressor.
