BREAKING NEWS: Caution issued over telephone fraud involving jury duty
Citizens in Cumberland County are being warned of an ongoing scheme involving jury service that is being committed through telephone calls.
"Citizens need to be aware that individuals identifying themselves as officers of the court have been contacting residents by telephone and notifying them that they have failed to show for jury duty and to clear it up, they need, for verification purposes, names, birth dates and Social Security numbers," Sheriff Butch Burgess said in a press release.
"They may even ask for credit card numbers. This is a scam," the sheriff said.
The press release went on to read that it has been documented that jury scams have been around for years, but has seen a resurgence in recent months.
"As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone," Burgess continued. "They generally correspond via mail."
Persons who have been contacted and have already given out personal identification need to check their accounts and credit reports, and contact the local law enforcement office.
"Protecting yourself is the key," Burgess continued. "Never give out your personal information."
