Seriously injured man files charges in assault

A man who first denied being assaulted and later quit breathing in an ambulance on the way to the hospital has been released from a regional trauma center and has now filed felony charges against the man he says caused his injuries.

Phillip Joseph Alves, 23, 815 Spokane Lane, is charged with one felony count of aggravated assault. Bond was set at $1,000 and he is to make his first appearance in General Sessions Court on Feb. 1.

He is accused of assaulting Michael Carr whose age and address were unavailable.

Lake Tansi Security Officers were dispatched to Alves' residence on Spokane Lane on Jan. 9 on a report of two men fighting in the yard. When they arrived shortly after 8 p.m., they found Carr with serious injuries to his head and face.

Security Officer Marty McCoy asked the victim what had happened and was told, by Carr, that Carr had fallen out of a tree "and hit every limb on the way down."

The victim became combative and uncooperative, which can be indicative of a serious head injury, and an ambulance was dispatched to the scene.

When Carr was placed in the ambulance, he became unconscious and stopped breathing for a few moments. He was rushed to Cumberland Medical Center and airlifted to The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville where he spent several days in the intensive care unit.

On his release, Carr contacted Tansi Security and stated he wanted to press charges and McCoy secured a warrant last week that was served on Alves on Tuesday.

Information sought on killing of two bald eagles
Approximately one year ago, in February 2011, a mature bald eagle was shot and killed in Bledsoe County, about one mile east of the intersection of Hwy. 101 and Big Springs Gap Road. A few weeks later, about 30 miles away, a second mature bald eagle was shot and killed in Cumberland County, east of Crossville in Crab Orchard. The eagle was discovered near the Crab Orchard School adjacent to Main St., close to the Old Easley Swimming Hole.
