The Cumberland County Commission approved the following budget amendments during the commission's January monthly meeting:
• Resolution 010201-7 — A central cafeteria fund budget amendment in the amount of $4,347.89 for the school system’s cafeteria budget. The funds are being moved from the line of miscellaneous refunds to insurance recovery.
• Resolution 010201-8 — A budget amendment to the county's general fund for $400 in order to raise the amount of funding to spend for a commercial real estate appraisal on the old Art Circle Library building. The budget committee had previously approved up to $1,200 for an appraisal, but no business would do the appraisal for that amount. Instead commissioners on the committee raised the amount by $400 to $1,600 for the appraisal. The increase required the amendment.
Commissioners Charles Seiber and David Gibson, 4th District; Jeff Brown, 8th District; and Clyde Cramer, 9th District, voted against the amendment. The remaining commissioners voted in favor and the amendment passed in a 14-4 vote.
• Resolution 010201-9 — A general fund amendment in the amount of $169,912 for federal through state flow through funds for Local Workforce Investment Area 4 activities through the Tennessee Career Center system. The funds provide services to increase employment, job retention, earnings and occupational skills for citizens. The East Tennessee Human Resource Agency adjusts the programs and funding and it is run through local counties.
Commissioners also unanimously approved Resolution 012010-2 — giving Cumberland County Mayor Brock Hill the authority to submit application for a Community Development Block Grant for South Cumberland Utility District. If approved the funds, up to $500,000, would go toward refurbishing the water system at Cumberland Mountain Retreat. South Cumberland Utility District would supply the water and would provide the required matching funds, set at 18 percent of the total water project cost, including the county's Three Star Program bonus points.
Mike Harvel, 7th District, motioned for approval and 5th District Commissioner Trey Kerley supported the motion.
In other areas commissioners approved the appointment of Danny Franklin Cantwell to serve as judicial commissioner for Cumberland County for a term to end Jan. 14, 2014. The appointment was motioned by Commissioner Gibson, supported by 3rd District Commissioner Johnny Presley and unanimously approved.
