Groups set 4th of July events

CROSSVILLE — There will be lots of activity in Cumberland County this weekend as the community celebrates the Fourth of July Monday.

A celebration honoring veterans will be held Saturday at Crossville Kroger parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations will be accepted to benefit United Service Organization. Customers can round-up their grocery orders through July 9 to benefit USO, as well. On Saturday, the opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be available, with proceeds benefiting the USO. The U.S. Army National Guard, Young Marines, Veterans of Foreign Wars post and the ladies auxiliary, Korean War Veterans and others will be in attendance.

Monday, the annual Pro Troop Rally kicks off the morning at 9 a.m at the Cumberland County Courthouse lawn. Activities include speakers from local government and various civic and military organizations as well as musical performances by local entertainers Jay Fox, D.J. Garrison, "Tee" Shurmur, Jadaya Taylor, Ron Dyer and others. Bring lawn chars and enjoy the morning.

The Pro Troop Rally will pause at 10 a.m. to cheer youngsters taking part in the Crab-Orchard Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution 10th annual DAR Fourth of July Children's Parade. The parade begins at the Palace Theatre and children are encouraged to take part by decorating themselves and their non-motorized vehicles in red, white and blue. Parents and grandparents are welcome to pull their youngsters in a wagon or push them in a stroller. The parade concludes at the Crossville Depot. Those participating in the parade should be at the Palace at 9:30 a.m.

Cumberland Mountain State Park will also host its third 4th of July Parade Monday. Meet at the park office at 9:30 a.m. and decorate a bike, vehicle and pets for the parade. Following the event are family games, watermelon seed spitting contest, Cumberland Mountain slideshow and more at the baseball field beside Shelter 1.

Those looking for food on Monday won't be disappointed. The Lake Tansi Exchange Club will hold its 24th annual barbecue fundraiser with dinner served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. next to the Thunderbird Recreational Center by the Ms. Anna Bell O'Brien Pavilion. The center is located on Deer Run Circle in Lake Tansi. Chicken dinners include 1/2 a chicken, beans, slaw, bread and dessert. Smoked pulled pork is also on the menu. Dinners are $7 while just chicken or pork is $5.

Monday evening, visit Crossville Centennial Park at 837 Industrial Blvd. for the annual July 4th fireworks show. Activities begin around 5 p.m. with concessions and an inflatable children's play area. The Trackside Band will perform at 7 p.m. and the fireworks show will begin promptly at 9 p.m.

    Commissioners on the building and grounds committee made a consensus agreement earlier this week to have the county attorney review an extensive repair estimate report for work needed at the Cumberland County Justice Center in order to repair numerous leaks and problems.

  • School bus driver cited for leaving the scene

    A Cumberland County school bus driver was given a summons to court and, according to unconfirmed reports, is no longer employed as a driver, after the bus she was driving with 63 persons on board struck a concrete guard rail and then continued on its way.

  • TSUD removes availability fee

    The Tansi Sewer Utility District board of directors voted Wednesday to remove a provision from its rules and regulations that would require those with sewer service availability to pay a one-time availability fee as well as monthly service fees, regardless of if the customer uses the service or not.
