Work has begun on a new Ford St., the only connector that will remain between Old Lantana Rd. and New Lantana Rd., between Miller Ave. and Halstead Dr. once the Lantana Rd. project is finished.
The Crossville Regional Planning Commission last month rejected a proposal from the Tennessee Department of Transportation that the Ford St. connector be abandoned. Last week, TDOT closed a section of Old Lantana Rd. and placed barriers up to allow work on the new connector to begin.
The new Ford St. will be on the east side of the Obed Kennels on what was called until this week Old Dorton Rd.
TDOT Project Supervisor Dave Bradley sent an email to the city dated Jan. 11 expressing concerns over construction of the Ford St. connector and listed the following issues:
•A 10 percent grade from Old Lantana Rd. to New Lantana Rd. "which might present a hazard during wintry conditions;
•The amount of drilling and blasting that will be required in close proximity to houses and businesses along Old Lantana Rd.;
•Driveways and front yards remaining along Old Lantana Rd. will be steep;
•Maintaining traffic to the houses and businesses within the construction zone will be difficult, costly and frustrating to property owners; and,
•The effect on businesses in the area will be negative during construction.
City Engineer Tim Begley told planners that while legitimate concerns, all those should have been considered prior to the bid letting, and that the contractor had made his bid based on the knowledge of existence of rock at the street site, the proximity of homes and stores.
When finished, motorists will be able to travel Ford St. from New Lantana Rd. to a "T" at the intersection of Old Lantana Rd. with ramp style entrances and exits to the old road.
City staff, just prior to the planning commission's regular monthly meeting Jan. 19, conducted a travel pattern study which included traffic counts that indicated many motorists in the mornings and afternoons traveling New Lantana Rd. would cross over to Old Lantana Rd. because it was a quicker access to Martin Elementary School, Cumberland County High School and the Crossville Technology Center.
Between the hours of 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Old Lantana Rd. at Old Dorton Rd., 342 northbound vehicles were counted and 154 southbound vehicles. During the same time period, 496 vehicles traveled to or from Old Dorton Rd.
The section of Old Dorton Rd. between Old and New Lantana Rds. will be closed once the Ford St. connector is completed and opened.
