Lightning is being blamed as the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a home in the Vandever community Monday, according to the Cumberland County Fire Department.
Douglas and Margaret Blaylock of Mutts Rd. off Brewer Rd. were able to escape, shaken but otherwise unhurt. Their home was a total loss.
Fire officials reported that lightning strike was the cause of the fire, and that the inferno was fed by a ruptured gas line that enveloped the house in flames. Volunteers from several stations in the southern and western sections of the county responded to the fire scene, along with full-time firefighters from the Complex station.
Also responding were members of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department, Crossville/Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross.
The Blaylocks are the parents of Cumberland County Road Superintendent Scott Blaylock and had lived at that location for many years.
