Shoppers warned about purse snatchers

CROSSVILLE — Stealing from open purses left in shopping carts while the owners shopped has long been a problem in Crossville, but a new method of stealing has been escalating in recent weeks and shoppers — especially women — are being warned.

Over the past year or so, there has been an increase in purse snatchings and just last week, one person had a wrist pouch torn from their arm, while another lady had her purse snatched as she loaded her purchases into her vehicle.

The latest incident occurred in the Dollar General Market parking lot Sunday around 2:50 p.m., according to Ptl. Donald Hammons' report.

A Clarkrange woman was placing her purchases in the rear of her vehicle when she felt something strike her shopping cart. The woman told police she turned in time to see a woman traveling in a gold colored mini van hanging out the window. The woman snatched her purse from the shopping cart and fled onto Miller Ave.

The woman was described as "skinny" and laughing as the van fled the scene.

The purse, wallet, cash, cell phone and personal identification were taken. Loss was placed at more than $425.
