Schools to wait for more up-to-date textbooks

CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County School System will keep its current series of math textbooks because book publishers have not yet incorporated Tennessee curriculum standards into the newest series.

"The majority of the committee voted to stay with these," Bruce Simmons, supervisor of instruction for grades kindergarten through 5th grade, told the Cumberland County Board of Education. "The new books don't match the state standards any better than what we've already got. They thought it best to stay with this."

The schools use Houghton Mifflin '05 series for kindergarten through fifth grade; McDougal Littell "05 series for sixth through eighth grade; and Glencoe/McGraw-Hill '05 series for high school.

Chairman Dan Schlafer asked how teachers were meeting student needs and the state standards currently if textbooks did not include the necessary standards.

Aarona VanWinkle, director of schools, said, "Even the new books don't align with the core curriculum. We use the books we have now as a resource, but like the past three years, the teachers pull from other resources to meet the curriculum."

She said purchasing new books this next year would be wasting money as teachers would continue to have to supplement the material.

The textbook companies do have online resources available to the schools.

David Bowman, 7th District representative, moved to approve the textbook certification, supported by Richard Janeway, 2nd District representative. The motion was unanimously approved.

The board also voted to approve two grant applications for North Cumberland Elementary School. The first is a Target Grant that, if awarded, will be used to purchase new technology equipment. The second is the Dollar General Youth Literacy Grant program which, if awarded, would be used for English language learning classes, family reading, tutoring, parenting classes and GED classes.

The School Nutrition Program was granted approval of food and non-food supplies bid specifications as well as bid specifications for a steamer.

The program also received permission to sell an old bus used to transport supplies and equipment to schools.

The bus was once a special education bus in the school system, but was approved as surplus when it could no longer be used to transport children. At that time, it was transfered to the school nutrition department.

Kathy Hamby, school nutrition supervisor, noted the bus had numerous mechanical issues and was no longer reliable to drive long distances. She asked for approval to sell the bus and use funds to make repairs on another bus to be transferred to the nutrition department from the technology department.

In other business, the board approved disposal of surplus technology equipment at the Central Office and Brown Elementary.

The following volunteers were also approved:

South Cumberland Elementary — Cynthia Diane Atkinson, Timothy Ray Begley, Kathie Ann Bell, Sherry Virginia Clark, Heather Paige (Loveday) McLaughlin and Alethea Siwka;

At Pine View Elementary — Jennifer Allen, Leon Golliher, Rita Lee, Tom Lee, Stacey McElhaney, Kaylene Roberts, Jason Roberts and Chad Spicer;

At North Cumberland Elementary — Rachel Banfield, Allison Brendel, Tim Copeland, Mark Coudriet, Amy Hecker, Lindsey Herrin, Kim Hinch, Elesha Hunt, Danetta Kurtyak, Lisa McCloud, Melissa Patrick, Beth Selby, Sherri Sisco, Debbie Whitaker, Cora Wyatt and Nelda York; and

At Cumberland County High School — Romalina Thompson, Kaye Blakely and Becky Cook.
