Woman burglary suspect pleads to 7 felonies

A Cumberland County woman who cooperated with authorities pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Court to her role in a local burglary and theft crime spree involving over a dozen business and residential burglaries and received a suspended sentence.

Destiny Johnie Phipps, 21, whose last known address was listed on Lantana Rd., will have plenty of time to pay restitution to crime victims while she serves the next eight years on probation.

Crossville Police stated that Phipps and two male co-defendants may have been together or between the three of them responsible for at least 24 burglaries and thefts in and around the city.

Businesses and individuals hit by during the crime wave included Chuckles, The Pit, two Friendly Marts, Eclipse Salon (twice), Tanrageous, The Look, Jiffy Mart, Tony's Nails, Thompson Auto Sales, James' Auto, W&W; Auto and Maria Coffman.

Ten other cases were closed although the trio was not charged in connection with those crimes.

Phipps pleaded guilty to five counts of felony burglary and received four-year suspended sentences on each count, to be served on probation.

She also pleaded guilty to felony theft more than $1,000 and received the same sentence. And finally, Phipps pleaded guilty to theft more than $500 and received a two-year suspended sentence.

She is to pay $500 restitution to the economic crime fund on those cases. Phipps personally and jointly is to pay over $3,700 in restitution to victims.

In other cases on the docket, the following took place.

Community corrections

•Tommy R. Meadows, under community corrections for a promotion of the manufacture of methamphetamine charge, forfeiture and attachment issued for failure to appear for revocation hearing; ten days in jail and bond doubled.

•Amy Teleah Vaughn, Douglas Fields appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing continued to Feb. 12.

Probation violations

•Jimmy Franklin Brown Jr., Public Defender's Office appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing set for Feb. 12.

•Matthew P. Cape, Public Defender's Office appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing set for Feb. 12.

•Alvin F. Lane, revocation hearing continued to March 8 at which time defendant is to return to court with an attorney.

•Brian Eric McCauley, on probation for two counts of second offense drunk driving, found guilty of probation violations and was ordered to serve 20 days in jail on weekends and then returned to probation until all fines and court costs are paid in full.

•Patrick D. McClanahan, on probation because of a statutory rape conviction, had probation revoked because of violations and had probation extended for two years or until all is paid in full.

•Justin Alan McCormic, Earl Patton appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing continued to March 15.

•Joshua A. McIntire, on probation because of three counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of theft more than $1,000 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, had probation revoked because of probation violations, ordered to serve three years and four months of his sentence with credit for time served.

•Christopher Lynn Miller, on probation because of a statutory rape conviction, had probation revoked and was ordered to serve four months in jail.

•Larry Robert Nale, on probation because of a reckless endangerment conviction, had fine waived in case with revocation charge dropped.

•Dustin M. Nelson, probation revocation hearing continued to Jan. 27.

•Treva Michelle Owens, Public Defender's Office appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing set for Feb. 12.

•Rueben Shiloh Pedde, Public Defender's Office appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing set for Feb. 12.

•Daniel P. Sherrill, on probation because of aggravated burglary, theft more than $1,000 and vandalism less than $500 charges, had probation revoked and was ordered to serve the remainder of his sentence.

•Danny Ray Smith, probation revocation hearing continued to Feb. 11.

•Traci RoseAnn Rector, Public Defender's Office appointed to represent the defendant; revocation hearing set for Feb. 12.

•Marvin Christopher, probation revocation hearing continued to May 7.

•Crystal M. Brown, probation revocation hearing continued to Jan. 27.

•Jacob Key, probation revocation hearing continued to Feb. 12.

  • Information sought on killing of two bald eagles

    Approximately one year ago, in February 2011, a mature bald eagle was shot and killed in Bledsoe County, about one mile east of the intersection of Hwy. 101 and Big Springs Gap Road. A few weeks later, about 30 miles away, a second mature bald eagle was shot and killed in Cumberland County, east of Crossville in Crab Orchard. The eagle was discovered near the Crab Orchard School adjacent to Main St., close to the Old Easley Swimming Hole.
