Victims nab auto theft suspect after crash

CROSSVILLE — A Crossville man faces several charges, including felony auto theft, after he reportedly stole a vehicle from outside a residence in the city and then crashed the car while attempting to flee from police.

Johnny Ray Davis, 27, 3904 Highland Lane, is charged with theft of a vehicle, evading arrest, second offense driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license.

Crossville Police were dispatched to the area of Ivy Ave. last Wednesday around 2:15 a.m. on a report of a vehicle theft in progress. One of the first officers on the scene, Ptl. J.R. Williams Jr., spotted the black 1991 Jeep Cherokee belonging Keli and Kyle Booth traveling west on Braun St.

Williams attempted to stop the vehicle after it turned onto Braun Cove St., almost striking a parked vehicle. Instead of stopping for the blue lights and siren, the vehicle's driver drove through three yards on Braun Cove and Braun Hill Circle before crashing down an embankment in the 300 block of Ivy Ave., Williams reported.

The Booths reportedly spotted a suspect running from the wrecked vehicle and nabbed him, holding him at the scene until police arrived.

Davis will answer the charges in Cumberland County General Sessions Court.
