Lantana Road project marches on
The long-awaited Lantana Road widening project got under way last month as the contractor began clearing and grading for an expanded road.
The project includes widening Lantana Road from Miller Avenue to Dunbar Road, with much of the improvements taking place off the current Lantana Road route.
According to Jennifer Flynn, regional community relations officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the 3.37 miles of improvements are expected to cost $21.9 million. The project is being funding through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.
Bids were opened June 12, 2009, and work began in late July. The contractor is Rogers Group, Inc. of Nashville.
The project was announced in November 2003, when state lawmakers visited Crossville to announce that what one lawmaker once called "the worst highway in the state" would be a top priority for improvements.
That moniker was coined by state Rep. Charles Curtiss of Sparta.
Before construction work could begin on the project, TDOT had to acquire 154 tracts of land. According to Flynn, TDOT is continuing negotiations of a few tracts, and four condemnation proceedings have begun.
The project included four business relocations, one non-profit relocation and 14 residential relocations. Twenty-six signs were also relocated.
According to a map of the project area, construction will veer off the current Lantana Road alignment near Pigeon Ridge Road, traveling south of the current alignment to Miller Avenue.
The improvements are expected to be complete by Oct. 31, 2011.
