Suspect charged in church burglary


A Cumberland County sheriff's deputy responding to a burglary alarm in the middle of the night discovered a church door open and a man inside the building.

Hollis Melven Cliburn Jr., 40, is charged with burglary of the Homestead Baptist Church on Jan. 26. He was also served with an attachment for failure to appear in court on a revoked license charge and with a warrant charging telephone harassment.

According to the arrest affidavit, Deputy Greg Green responded to the call around 1:30 a.m. last Tuesday and found a basement door open at the church located near the intersection of Hwy. 68 and Deep Draw Rd.

Inside he found a man later identified as Cliburn, who was taken into custody without incident.

Bond was set at $2,000 and the suspect is to appear in General Sessions Court on Feb. 8.
