A Cumberland County man has been arrested and charged in connection with an attempt to pass a counterfeit bill at a local retail store, according to Crossville Police reports.

James D. Cumby, 22, 5361 W. Creston Rd., was charged with one count of criminal simulation in connection with an incident at Walmart on Sept. 22.

According to an arrest affidavit filed by Det. Gene Hall, Cumby is alleged to have attempted to pass a counterfeit $20 bill at Walmart. The cashier handling the transaction alerted a store manager who detained the suspect until police arrived.

Cumby told police, according to the arrest warrant, that he had obtained the bogus bill from a local man but that man was interviewed by police and denied any knowledge of the claim.

"The bill in question bore the same serial number as other counterfeit bills that have been passed at other retail locations throughout Cumberland County," the arrest warrant states. "The bill is easily identified as counterfeit."

Investigation into the incidents is continuing.
