Seventeen Cumberland Countians — including nine from one family — found themselves looking for shelter after fire swept through three residences in five days.
The first fire was reported to authorities last Tuesday night when county firefighters were dispatched to the Hood residence on Highland Lane with initial reports indicating people trapped inside the residence. When firefighters arrived and searched the residence, they found no one present.
The home belongs to Angela Hood and is shared by nine members of her extended family, Hood said. The fire was reportedly discovered by her son, Kelly, who told investigators he was passing by en route to pick up his child from a friend's house when he saw smoke coming from the residence.
Fire seemed to be confined to the middle of the residence but the structure suffered smoke and water damage and was deemed uninhabitable that night.
Cause of that fire remains under investigation.
Friday evening around 4:30 p.m. county firefighters were dispatched to the Patricia Anders residence on Truman Sherrill Rd. in the Midway community.
Smoke from the burning house could be seen from Lantana Rd. at Dunbar Rd. and the residence was fully enveloped in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Anders and five members of her extended family lived in that residence and while investigators had not pinpointed the cause of the fire, it is believed to have been an accidental incident.
The third fire was reported after midnight Saturday morning on Lantana Rd. and was responded to by Crossville firefighters. Elizabeth Hope and her 16-year-old son, Ricky, were asleep when fire broke out in the kitchen area of their efficiency apartment. They escaped with very little. The family dog also escaped but two pet cats perished in the fire, which totally destroyed the residence.
The fire also took out a utility service to an adjacent residence.
This fire was found to be accidental.
The Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to each of the fires.
